My Obama sign was stolen over the weekend and so was
my sister's sign. Could someone please suggest ways to keep this from happening?

1. bring em in at night... thats what the campaign headquarters told us
I have also seen the "coat it in vaseline" suggestion

7. Bring in at night is a good idea. Wish MN had more Obama signs available.

11. Actually, Vaseline and/or pepper spray is NOT a good idea...
As per a lawyer, here's why:

You put pepper spray coated vaseline on your Obama signs.
Some asshole freeper steals your signs.
He gets vaseline and pepper spray on his fingers.
He gets into his car and drives away.
While driving, he tries to wipe the vaseline off his fingers, and gets some of the pepper spray in his eyes.
He gets into a terrible accident and kills someone's kids.
The police investigate, and find the vaseline and pepper spray on his fingers and on your signs.
The freeper asshole is convicted of manslaughter and SUES YOU for "causing the accident."
Even if you don't get into any legal trouble, you are still open to a civil suit and may be liable for lots of damages.
Even if you don't have to pay damages, it will still cost you a hell of a lot of money and time defending yourself.

Better to just replace the signs when they are stolen, and/or bring them in at night!

2. best i've heard so far is to cover it with vaseline
so they get all icky when they try to take it, and it messes up whatever they put it in.

you could get a dog and leash it to the sign (or close by) at night and while you're gone.

surveillance is expensive and usually not effective unless you have it record what is happening to play back.

i wonder how effective a motion detector would be like the ones they use for outdoor lighting? could put one of those right there, and then it will also illuminate the sign as the thieves are running away.

i dunno, the vaseline one is the only one i actually heard someone use with a degree of success.

6. The weird this is that my sister and I live a mile from each other
and had them both stolen at the same time. Who would be so angry to make a night of it? I'm going after work today to buy us more signs and to report it to the campaign (not that I think it matters much at this point). It just infuriates me,I've never had it happen before and neither has my sister.

3. Graphite-based lubricant.
Plus an optional dose of pepper spray or something very spicy.

4. 4 years ago people were buying battery powered alarms
The alarms were like $10 at the time. If someone started to pull the sign, it would go off hopefully scaring them off.

5. Chain it down, put a light on it, get a bigger, less wieldly sign?
Others have more nefarious measures, such as itching powder and such...but I'd just try to make it avoidable, rather than cause injury.

10. Tanglefoot
MUCH more obnoxious than vaseline.

Just don't put it along the top edge of the sign, where birds might perch and get stuck.

Good luck.
