Question: What's the difference between The Polls and internal polls?
Andrea Mitchell had a McCain campaign heavy on (who, although he spouted the McCain talking points, was much more reasonable and tolerable than Rick Davis, for example) --

Anyway, this guy said, and Andrea agreed, that The Polls and internal polls differed. That internal polling showed a much closer race than The Polls.

So that makes me wonder where the internal polling gets the numbers from? Not from the same people that The Polls do?

AND, do you think McCain's and Obama's internal polls reflect roughly the same numbers?

Thanks for any clarity on this.

1. Internal poll method at McCain Camp.

Poller 1: Boss is going to have a heart attack when he hears that he is behind 15 points.
Poller 2: Tell him is is just 4 points, he won't yell at us then and might prevent a heart attack. Don't want a repeat of last week when we told him he was behind 10 points, he kicked poor Paul out the door in 30 seconds.

2. Ha! I'd do the same if I were them. And have my resume out so I'd be ready
to interview on November 5. :)

3. Most polls are done for news companies
and are relatively limited in sample size. Private Polls are often larger and have wolf whistle issues surveyed to find out effectiveness of particular campaign talking points.

4. The "internal polls" are SECRET, so you can make up whatever shit you want about them
That's the difference.
