Progressives might win either way in November
I've been thinking about something recently. I think this election is probably the most important election of my lifetime due to what's at stake. I have a feeling that if Kerry wins, we will be breathing a sigh of relief as we celebrate. However, if Bush were to win, I don't think our side is going to give up. I would become a lot more involved with civil liberties groups like the ACLU and People For the American Way. I have donated to both of them, and if Bush wins on Nov. 2nd, I will immediately donate $100 (a lot for me) to the ACLU and will become a monthly donor to PFAW. I think the left and the left-of-center would become much more aggressive. The election might even be challenged in court if there is anything suspicious about the electronic voting machines. If Bush became more unpopular, and if the Supreme Court justices could hang on for just 2 years, there could be a 1998-style Democratic sweep in 2006! More Democrats in Congress could make nominating right-wing justices much more difficult, and Bush could be forced to settle for a more moderate appointee.

What I'm saying is that a Kerry victory will save the Supreme Court and will be a major blow to the radical right. It will be the biggest victory for progressive people in my lifetime so far. But should Bush somehow win, it isn't over!! In fact, if Bush wins, the right wing might wish that Kerry had won by the time we get through with them!

1. Ahh yes, the 2000 Nader Greens argument.
That if Bush won, the whole country would realize what a bunch of thugs the Repukes are and go totally liberal.

Didn't happen. Bush did ruin the country and the world, but half of the nation still supports him.

2. What u say is true but we're tired of waiting.
It's easy to say "If Bush wins, the Democrats will have a sweep in 2006." But will they? We've seen this shit before. Come 2006, some unforseen issue will pop up that prevents this sweep.

You make a good point, though.

American elections are set up in such a way that I can punch you for 3 years, and in the 4th year I will hug you and you will say "Oh, thanks. You're a good man. I might vote for you."

We do have short memories it seems.

9. Come 2006, the Next Bush War will be an issue. He will invade another
country if he wins. Probably more than one. But I think it likely that the Next Bush War will be an issue that favors republicans not democrats.

3. Trust me on this friend,
No matter who wins in November, true progressives are going to lose. By putting Kerry in office all we will have done is trade a greater evil for a lesser one, that is all. The bloody war in Iraq will continue to rage, jobs will continue to flee out of our country, the poor will continue to get poorer, and the middle class will continue to disappear. Welcome to the Second Gilded Age.

Bush will continue his descent to hell with us. Kerry is a step in the right direction. Bush would like to put you and me in Gitmo if he could. Kerry won't.

If you want to demoralize Dems into not voting, knock yourself out. But your position is naive at best, dangerous at worst, and I ain't buying it.

4. I was sure Reagan would be impeached in his 2nd term!
And yet he was recently canonized, they are naming stuff after him, and they want to replace FDR w him on the dime.

Wouldn't it be nice if they had their own country... like say.. to the left of the Mississippi(sp) and could do with their tax dollars as they please?

We could have the east.... and do with our tax dollars as we please. Wouldn't it be loverly?
