The Hate Talk Express -- Is This Really the Way You Want to Go Out, Senator McCain? (Mary Lyon)
Edited on Tue Oct-14-08 08:09 PM by Tace

Mary Lyon, From The Left -- World News Trust

Oct. 14, 2008 (World News Trust) -- Dear Senator McCain,

One way or another, you reach an end on November 4th. We do know that for certain, even though no one can say what kind of end it will be -- whether the road takes you to the Oval Office or to the finish of your long-held ambition to be President. But one thing has ended already: your integrity, and any protestations that your campaign isn’t as racist and hate-ridden as hell. This is how you want to close at least this towering phase of your career?

Sorry to be that blunt, but that’s how it looks. That’s how it looks whenever the goons (predominantly Anglo) at your rallies start shouting “Terrorist!” and “Traitor!” and “Kill him!” -- and when an unfortunate female low-information voter insists Barack Obama is an Arab to be feared and mewls a wimped-out “no?” when you attempt an equally wimped-out correction of her faulty opinion. That same woman later told reporters that even a personal reassurance from you that “he’s not” didn’t change her mind. Your campaign’s denunciation of Congressman John Lewis’s complaint about how you and your running mate are playing with fire and racist hatred speaks a lot more forcefully.

I’ve seen Code Pink protestors forcibly ejected from similar public assemblies. I’ve heard what they’ve called out. None of them ever advocated the death of someone. Rather, they tend to object to that kind of thing. The same goes for anyone in any Obama/Biden crowd -- they may boo your name or your policies but they don’t advocate violence or murder against you. So how come the people who’ve done that at your rallies aren’t treated the same as the Code Pink people -- physically carted out of there and thus made into an example of how not to behave? No. They’re allowed to stay and keep on cheering their angry, murderous, racist cheers. And all you do is offer a milquetoast version of “now-now-now,” while outside, some of them have actually been telling reporters that they think Obama should die.

Edited on Tue Oct-14-08 08:13 PM by Sebastian Doyle
He says that McCain and Palin have deliberately targeted Obama for murder.

6. I think sarah palin is maybe subconsciously trying to get him killed.
She may not mean to. She may not THINK she's even marginally responsible. But deep down, well, I have my suspicions. If some of these people are saying this stuff out loud in public, you can bet that other people are thinking it (and just too chicken to own up to it). Besides, she told limbaugh that she has nothing to lose by doing so. How nice for her.

These people really are evil. And yeah, all this shit comes out at THEIR rallies and town halls and assemblages. Remember during the primaries when some woman stood up and asked mcsame "what are we going to do about 'The Bitch'"? She was referring to Hillary at the time, and everybody at the town hall there snickered knowingly and conspiratorially. As did john mcsame, without bothering to say anything to discourage such talk. He thought it was just plenty funny. A laugh riot. Yeah, we're really laughing at that, john. You and all your pals are just an absolute scream.

:sarcasm: :puke:

2. The example of the code pink for no more killing vs asking for more killing.
There is an obvious character flaw in the Repbulican party.....

4. Ironically, should McCain prevail he will have the same problem Bush* had
To start with, I don't think McCain will prevail, but we have had more than one Presidential election in the last decade conclude with a "surprise" ending. Should that happen again, McCain, like Bush*, could NEVER unite this Country behind anything he attempted to do. Once again, we will revert to Red States versus Blue States, but I believe it will be uglier than the last eight years have been (if that is possible).

On a personal level, I think McCain knows he is going down. The ONLY decision he truly has left is, HOW will he go down. It will be interesting to watch that decision play out.

On the subject of the his and Palin's supporters publicly calling out appalling labels and death threats, it baffles me why these people are not arrested by the police on the spot. That should not be tolerated on either side of the aisle. Making a threat against a public figure of the nature that we have observed should be dealt with quickly, visibly and harshly. We cannot allow our society to descend into any further chaos than it is in now. Failing to maintain control and civility while election campaigns are underway puts us exactly there. (But I am not talking about protesters who conduct themselves appropriately; I am talking about the hate-mongers who verbally advocate violence.)

I never thought I would see the day when This Country would be a country I could hardly recognize as the United States of America. But that day is here. Your words make us all take pause to think about how we got here, and what we need to do to restore our political, ethical souls. Nice going, as usual, Mary.

7. Thanks, Samantha!
I was really stunned to watch Keith Olbermann's Special Comment tonight (Tuesday) that voiced much the same outrage my column did earlier in the day, only FAR more eloquently! That and E.J. Dionne and Andrew Sullivan and Frank Rich and a bunch of others - NOT that I would presume to place myself anywhere near their company, certainly. But it is reassuring to me to see all these high-profile voices chiming in, in public, in high-profile venues, all saying basically the same thing - blowing basically the same whistle.

If I can be just one small piccolo note in that expanding symphony, I'll be happy.

8. Yeah, that's the problem. Because, as I said in the piece, he needs these people.
They're about all he can count on anymore to turn out and vote for him. The Nutcase Base.
