Cook Political Report issues the Coup de Grace...
Since early September this race has shifted rather dramatically in Obama's favor. As long as the focus is almost exclusively on the economy, this race is almost unwinnable for McCain. It would take a major external event, the proverbial October Surprise, to shift the spotlight to national security or some other subject that would allow McCain to highlight his strengths. At this stage, the most relevant question would seem to be: "How big will the train wreck be for the Republican Party up and down the ballot in November." Obama currently has a 260 to 158 Electoral vote edge, with 120 Electoral votes in the Toss Up column. 270 are needed to win.

1. The Economy
is the key.

They are already trying to change the subject away from it.

Stay focused.

It's the Economy.

2. Cook is about the most conservative of the pollsters.
So this is fairly significant.

3. Why do these guys think it's a "given" that McCain will benefit
from a national security crisis? Do they think Obama is going to shrink into a corner and suck his thumb. During this entire campaign Obama has been calm, stable, intelligent and presidential. McCain has lurched around acting like a stupid old fool in la la land.

A national security crisis would just give Obama one more opportunity to demonstrate what real leadership looks like. People will appreciate the way Obama's calm assurances make them feel. And be annoyed by McCain's spastic antics.

Does Cook even understand that it is a myth that McCain's strength in national security has never been tested? Does he understand that so far it is nothing but an illusion?
