1. He should address the accusation
calmly but decisively, then gently explain to McCain that perhaps the reason voters are running away from him in massive numbers is that he has, in the past, denounced negative campaigning as the last refuge of a scoundrel with nothing constructive to say.

"The American people aren't stupid, John. What you don't seem to realize is that, every time you and your surrogates launch a negative attack, you are assuming that American voters will forget what you used to say about negative campaigns and the people who run them. Do you really think Americans are stupid, John?"

but if McAss wants to play the guilt by association game, there's plenty for him to explain too, but the American people are more interested in policy than negative attacks.
