Perhaps McCain will have zingers at the ready tonight--but Obama will NOT stumble.

It takes two people to decide the outcome of a debate--one to win and won to lose. And people seem to forget that the two most well-known zingers in debate history--Reagan's line about "my opponent's youth and inexperience" and Bentsen's "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" are so well remembered today only because Quayle and Mondale had no decent comeback at the ready--or worse yet, weren't expecting them at all.

Quayle just blinked and stared like Bentsen had slapped him in the face. Mondale chuckled at Reagan's joke as hard as anybody, and years later, said that he knew the election was over the moment he heard the laughter in the room. But Obama is too smart for anything of the sort--he's gone two rounds already with the old man, and knows all of his tricks. He's got a comfortable lead above McCain, and he'll be relaxed but not lazy.

I'm looking forward to tonight.

Anybody but me wondering if McCain will make some kind of play to be the "positive" candidate tonight? Try to get some sort of anti-negative ad pledge? Not that he has any ads BUT negative in his pocket, but still. I do wonder what tonight's stunt will be.

A person needs to have an energy level equal to the line, in order to properly deliver a "zinger." McCain's attempts to do so will, at best, have the energy of Jackie Mason attempting to deliver some of Dave Chappelle's zingers.
