Has there ever been a legitimate October Surprise?
A surprise that would really change the dynamics of an election?

I have not found any examples of it, so why are so many people obsessed about a possible "October Surprise"?

4. Reagan making a shady back-door deal to release the Iranian hostages...
...in order to ambush President Carter.

5. Yep, it was coined because of what Reagan pulled off....
I'd have to look it up, but as I remember it, Carter had a double digit lead over Reagan just a few weeks before the election.

When the hostages weren't released it was a huge benefit to Reagan.

According to the MSM, his success is always attributed to his debate performance but it's not the whole story. When they talk about this election, they NEVER bring up the hostages.

You may be able to find a copy of the book "October Surprise" that details the back door dealings by Reagan that included last minute trips by Bush, Sr. to negotiate the deal.

7. I think it was a September surprise
The failing economy brought to light because the economy had been failing for a long time now. I guess most people woke up and realized that we are in a huge crisis.

8. 1972, Kissinger: "Peace is at hand."
Nixon was probably going to win re-election anyway, but the prospect that Vietnam was about to be over was the final nail in McGovern's coffin.
