20. Well, it's long island, so, it's either a narrow private beach you can't reach by car or
a tacky shopping mall with a Sizzler out front.

Either way, I get claustrophobia because there are only 3 nasty bridges out of that island.

29. If you count Staten Island...
And that's a big if.

And you can take the tunnel, if it sounds like fun. Personally, I don't want to be stuck under there in a jam.

I have a friend who just left long island for brooklyn. A slight improvement, because I can skip the L.I.E., but, I'll end up on the Belt.

Lots of fun.

35. So is Queens...you can't get off Long Island without going through New York City
Edited on Wed Oct-15-08 03:57 PM by alcibiades_mystery
Unless you take a ferry to Connecticut from the north shore.

That said, as people from Queens and Brooklyn will tell you, Queens and Brooklyn are New York City, not "Long island," even though they are technically ON Long Island. Queens and brooklyn = New York City board of Ed, and NYPD. Nuf said.

Queens doesn't exactly consider itself New York City either
At least when I was a kid living in Queens, we spoke of going "in to the city" when we went to Manhattan and "out on the island" when we went to Nassau.

I think that, like Schrodinger's cat, we existed in a state of quantum uncertainty, where we were either both or neither at the same time.

45. I grew up in Queens
"The City" definitely means Manhattan, but let some Minnesotan transplanted Manhattanite tell you that you're NOT from New York City and that person should prepare for a savage ass-kicking. Queens in New York City, period.

48. So can we agree Queens is New York City but not "the city"?
It's kind of like in Saturday Night Fever, where John Travolta dreams of getting out of the discos of Brooklyn and making it big in Manhattan.

Manhattan is dreamland, it's the line of skyscrapers you can see along the horizon, it's the magical world on the other side of the river.

I actually lived on the Upper West Side until I was 14, and even then *that* Manhattan was something else again. It was "downtown" and was a world apart from the neighborhoods where ordinary people lived.

The mental geography of New York is a very strange place.

But they're still from New York City.

Edited on Wed Oct-15-08 03:58 PM by alcibiades_mystery
Whitestone Bridge
Throgs Neck Bridge
Triborough Bridge
59th Street Bridge
Manhattan Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge
Williamsburgh Bridge

(You don't even need the Verrazano or the tunnels - there are two of those - to get to seven)

Cheers.

36. Come on...
You have to count the Verrazano Bridge. IMO it's one of the most beautiful bridges in the country. And I'm not just saying that because I live under it (no not in a box for you wise guys).

It'll be nice to see and hear a President we can be proud of - and also one that won't make us barf everytime he shows up or speaks.
