Is Biden up for re-election to his Senate seat?
I just went to http://www.electoral-vote.com and checked the Senate races, and it had Biden up 60-30 over the Pug challenger.

Since he'll be serving as VP, what happens to his Senate seat?

1. Yes, he is. He'll win it, and then...
he'll step down to take the vice presidency. The Governor (a Democrat) will appoint a new Senator. One of the big favorites for the seat is Biden's son, Beau Biden, the state AG, who is serving in Iraq.

9. Probably would make it hard for him to be a Senator.

14. What're they gonna do? Tell him he can't be a senator because he's fighting in Iraq?

Talk about your outrage. If Tim Johnson can be a senator while bed-ridden, I'm pretty sure Beau Biden can do it while in Iraq.

16. Good point! Besides, don't they get leave occasionally?
He could use leave to get sworn in and maybe to cast a
critical vote (if needed). Hopefully we'll have a big
enough majority that one vote here and there won't matter
until he's back next year.

17. Beau ran in election against Ferris Wharton and won.

I don't know that he'd want to fly in on his Dad's coattails as an appointee. Alot of people would like it and some wouldn't. He made a comment that he wanted to do it on his own when he ran for Attorney General. Looks too much like a 'dynasty' to be appointed. He's a good guy, but he could always run AFTER he returns from Iraq against whomever gets it.

My best scenario is O/B win the P/VP slots, Biden steps down as Senator, Minner appoints Carney and he serves out Joe Biden's term, Carney runs for Mike Castle's Rep seat (Republican - former Gov. who's rarely been challenged), and Beau runs for the Senate and takes his Dad's place. Which still leaves DE with DLCer Tom Carper, but maybe with the right leadership, he won't be so wishy-washy.

A girl can dream, can't she?

12. They told their group to plan to be gone for a year.
40 days training in TX, then at least 10 months in Iraq.

10. I like the idea of Beau, but I also think we had two great dems
running for Governor. I'd like to see Carney (who barely missed winning the primary) get it. He's Lt. Governor now, but I'm not sure that he'd want it. I've spoken with some of his family, and said that idea hadn't even occurred to them.

15. That's an excellent point, and I'm not nearly familiar enough with Minner's relationship...
with Biden and Carney to posit who it might be, though I believe Biden is a Minner appointee while Carney was elected, no?

2. His replacement would be appointed by Delaware's Governor
Ruth Ann Minner - a Democrat.

13. Jack Markell already beat John Carney in the primary...
and he's expected to beat the Republican in the general. Ruth Minner was term-limited out, and so couldn't run.

So, the governor will be a Democrat regardless. That said, if the GOP won, I'm not sure whether Joe Biden could resign his seat early and allow Minner to do a last-minute nomination. Someone more expert on Delaware's laws would have to say.

6. Yes he is! I'm saying a prayer every day that all my neighbors
are smart enough to vote for him for both the P/VP ticket AND his Senate seat. If that repub witch gets elected, we'd have our own Delaware version of Sarah Palin. That's the last thing we need. She's one of those repub talking head commentators on TV. Her signs are all over the place. I've just started seeing "Delaware's Joe Biden" signs around Newark lately. Her big 'selling' point is supposed to be that she wants to revitalize "Reaganomics into the 21st century". UGH!!!

I fantasized the other day about drawing a mustache on her sign at an intersection I was stuck at. Her dayum sign was 4'x6'.

Speaking of signs, the road workers had to stack their bases of those big orange drums someplace the other day. They piled them on the side of the road - using a McCain/Palin sign as the center post :) You could just see the top of the sign sticking out.
