The Squirrel Vote
By David Brooks and Gail Collins
The Conversation

A series of exchanges between Times columnists David Brooks and Gail Collins about the presidential race.

..............

Fifth, I have to confess my interest in the campaign is waning. I view the McCain candidacy as one of the most painful tragedies I’ve ever witnessed. The Obama campaign is uninteresting in its cool professionalism, though I am interested in how Obama will govern. The horse race is boring now that one candidate is six furlongs ahead. The financial crisis is really interesting, and somehow more consequential than the election. I’ve become addicted to stories about the TED spread and the Libor, and I’m really curious about how the turmoil is going to reshape societies and political cultures.

1. I'm not shocked that David Brooks isn't interested in this campaign.
Nobody likes watching their team lose a ballgame.

3. hmmm
And he told Maureen Dowd (it's in her article today) that Palin won't be the nominee in 2012 because she represents the worst of right wing radio culture.

4. It's epic. Only thing more tragic is the last 8 years.

5. Katrina was a "painful tragedy." As was Iraq. The McCain campaign is a painful joke.
Typical David Brooks.

He's concerned.

6. I disagree about Obama's campaign. We have two great candidates and a lot of excitement about them.
Ok, it's probably boring for the media, because Obama's campaign was almost gaffe-free.

7. But he finds both sides pretty boring. He thinks its an uninspiring campaign.
full of stupid ideas on both sides. I'm not sure I agree with him. But it hasn't, to my mind, been the most stirring of campaigns, or the campaign most full of consequential and hefty ideas.

8. Brooks is a rat fleeing the ship
He waited until the last minute to do it so he can look good for the next election cycle. Like he's totally even-handed and objective.

11. dear david, are you alive?
Obama is one of Those Candidates, whose campaign will go down in history. cool professionalism? Sure, when you're used to the children we've had running things from your party, I'm sure competency can be boring. But competency is actually welcomed above chronic chaos.
And ask any sports fan if they are bored watching one of Those athletes, the ones that don't come along very often...but when they do, they bring their team up to seasons of wins. the pleasure in watching the grace and talent of these athletes never bores one. You know, David, bored is the same as boring.

You need to get out more. If you aren't inspired by Obama's campaign, you may not be alive.

check it, friend.
