Saw a couple of young guys picketing the local Republican HQ... with NADER signs
Edited on Wed Oct-15-08 06:21 PM by VoodooGuru
They were also holding up two other signs: "NOBAMA" and "McKKKAIN". Both looked a lot like they came from the parking lot of a jamband show - wookiees to the core. (Having been to quite a few and partied with wooks on occasion, I know the type quite well!)

I couldn't resist this one.

"Hey, dudes, what's more wasted on Election Day - you, or your vote?"

Yet I still have a soft spot for young, foolish idealists. Just wish they'd recognize that Obama is the real deal while Nader has jumped the shark.

1. Offer them $50 for their Corvair.
They'd probably grab it in a heartbeat.

2. Quite a few
Nader supporters here in Little Beirut (Portland, OR.). Mostly younger folk with some education. You used the term 'wookiees'--are you referring to the hobo-chic, no haircuts no shaves crowd? If so, great term!

That's what they are, idealists. I choose not to argue or antagonize them, though: I remember being that idealistic (remember being intelligent but not having any wisdom?). When you get right down to it, one has to vote one's conscience.

4. yeah, that's actually a term from the jamband scene
"Hippie" went out of date a while back since not all wooks are hippies and not all hippies anymore are wookiees. Hippie connotes a different mindset, a certain awareness and earnestness. Wooks, for the most part, seem to be there for the party.

There isn't anything wrong with being there for the party, mind you. Every good party needs lots of people who are, in fact, just there for the party.

There's even a site called Passed Out Wookiees featuring pictures of wooks who have partied just a shade too hard.

"Being Intelligent but not having any wisdom."

That's a solid representation. I used to be like that. A very long time ago. In the end, life is compromise. Very few people lead happy lives unless they are willing to compromise their inherent beliefs. In the end, no one is right about everything. It's sad, but true.

3. If they are picketing repubs then just maybe they will at least vote
Democratic for the House and Senate.

5. I hope so, too.
The "NOBAMA" thing still irks me a tad.

6. I heard a two guys talking about voting for Nader..

...because neither McKlan or Obama appealed to them. They didn't like McCain because of Palin. And they never really stated a reason for not liking Obama. So, they concluded, Nader was the only option.

Overheard this in an airport.

7. excellent.
Because, after all, heckling a couple of young idealists while they picket your opponent is grade-A strategy. Well done!

9. yeah, I know....
Yet that particular brand of idealism is mixed with a pretty healthy dose of willful obstinacy, and therefore invites ridicule. Even in front of the other side's headquarters.

Maybe I should've given them a dozen eggs to throw at the door, though.

12. there are plenty of things worse than obstinacy.
It's not as if we're exactly overflowing with independent thought in the US these days.
