1. If McCain hadn't brought this up,
he would simply have continued the failed tactic through to the election.


The problem is that there was no way for McCain to bring this up at the debate and not look angry and foolish. Sure Obama wanted him to cut it out, but McCain's move tonight facilitated the end of Ayers as an issue.

Americans saw McCain at his worst, and even die-hard Republicans squirmed.
