hubby saw it up close and personal last night
he works in a blue collar job with a team of about 12 people

a co-worker overheard hubby say he was voting his pocketbook and was going for the Dem. a co-worker said "You're voting for Obama? You want a n***er in the White House??"

hubby was shocked by the seething irrational naked hateful racism he saw last night.

35. I've come to my own simple conclusion
It is time for me to refuse to see past this kind of behavior about race. I am not going to be forgiving or tolerant of the stupidity.

I am not going to waste my time calling it out more than once per idiot; beyond that, I am going to just disassociate with anyone I find to hold these views. No socializing, no business dealings or buying products from people who I find out are racist, nothing doing.

They are doing a wonderful job of exposing themselves, while at the same time making Americans recoil in horror, and reflect on how disgusting and pitiful these ideas are. And these racists are simply marginalizing themselves into oblivion.

I will help speed that process in my own life by cutting out people like this.

At least in their minds. And they're desperately afraid of losing that.

28. Sorry, but your husband missed a golden opportunity
This is the problem many on our side have: we avoid the confrontation THEY start. There is nothing wrong with calmly confronting the racists, the ignorant, the uninformed etc.. and showing them how wrong they are and that their hate is not acceptable in a civil society.

33. Agreed, but
sometimes statements just take you off your feet. I know that I am not always right on top of the best response or even any response, we all operate differently and if he was outnumbered so to speak, discretion may have been the better part of valor. As these are his co-workers, he will certainly see them again and with wits collected can work on them one on one rather than as a group. We sometimes have to pick the best moment to make the case, because doing so at the wrong time can nullify our best efforts and make matters worse.

36. I understand
but if you work with these people you know them better than just hearing someone on the street saying this.

It's not easy - I know this. But somehow we have to learn to get the dialog going to get people to talk this out and at least try to show them how stupid they are.

I do not think her husband is a bad guy - not at all - but I just wish ALL OF US would take advantage of the moment better. I think we can expect this is going to get more common as we get closer to Obama being called President Elect Obama.

4. that's really sad
If this guy is a blue collar worker, his racism is going to trump the economic well-being of his family. Sure, vote for the white guy and then curse your fate in the soup line.

6. I'm not surprised
What amazes me more is some people seem to think we've "moved past" race, or that racism isn't a powerful political tool.

To me, the intent behind the "Obama is a muslim" or "Arab" nonsense is that it's a simple, and for some unfathomable reason more acceptable, code for "Obama is a n***er"

22. I told my EX son-in-law
when he used that word: "Saying that says more about you that it does about the black person you are talking about. If you ever want to go far in life, you need to watch it.
I can't stop you from thinking it, but I can tell you that using that language out in public will mark you."

19. I'm sickened
It's really brought out the ugly in people that I never would have expected. Someone I thought was 'progressive' passed on a joke they considered humorous, which appalled me and I'm still really shocked, as I was told to 'get a sense of humor'. OK.

The very offensive joke was "Do you know what Obama means when he talks about CHANGE?"

Come

Elected

This is in Massachusetts. I can't wait for Obama to get elected. I don't want my kids to life in a world where this type of hateful shit is acceptable.

34. They are out there even in Massachusetts
But they are also outnumbered. My Mom is 79 years old. She drew up with racist attitudes as the norm. We have had many an argument over that over the years. There were times when I threatened to not let my kids visit her because I didn't want them to hear this stuff.

There were times when I just wanted to give up, I just never figured I could change her, the mindset was just too ingrained in her. However, I and my others just kept on challenging her on this stuff. And she did get better, but so, damn, slowly.

Upshot: I went to visit her last weekend. I barely had a chance to ask her if she had seen the debates when she volunteered that she really like "that Obama guy." "I love the way he smiles. He's so bright and positive and smart. McCain is awful, just mean all the time."

My Mom is voting for Barack Obama and I never even laid the "hard-sell" on her. She just likes him. She likes his wife and his family. Obama comes across as a good guy to her and she wants to give him a chance. Wow! My Mom is voting for Barack Obama. Wow!

In odd moments I like to think that it was the persistance that paid off in getting her to change her attitude a bit. She did, finally, get the message that it's not alright to keep old, hurtful ways of thinking. So hang in there and keep up the fight. You never know who might just be persuaded next.

My Mom is voting for Barack Obama. Wow! (And this is happening in my lifetime. OMG, I never thought I would live to see this day. Not live to see the day a Barack Obama would get elected, but live to see the day when my Mom, me and my daughter are all on the same page, all willing to take that chance on hope. Wow oh wow!)

21. My husband got it yesterday at work too...
He's the production supervisor at a mid size company. We have several Obama stickers on the back of our car and last night as he was leaving one of his co-workers said "I can't believe you're voting for a babykilling n****er". He was still shaking when he came home. I just emailed him a little while ago to find out if the guy said anything else to him today, but so far, nothing.
