Please stop posting the "Don't Get Complacent!!!!!" threads.
No one here is complacent. No one here is going to just spend the next three weeks at the tanning salon, a karaoke bar, doing pub crawls, or in any other way behaving as though we don't still have a tough three weeks ahead of us.

This election is foremost on everyone's minds, and has been for a long time. There may be voter apathy out there, and there may be people out there who think Obama has this in the bag and so there's no reason to do anything further. But I doubt that this applies to anyone here. I think that everyone here is doing everything they can, and direct or indirect accusations of complacency are unfounded.

If you're worried about the election, there are about a million things you could be doing for the Obama campaign that would be much more constructive than posting yet another complacency thread.

Thank you for your time.

I have to cancel the karaoke pub crawl I was going to do tonight. Damn, and just when I got my tan to where I wanted it.

Spoilsport.

8. And whatever you do, don't be caught smiling.
Feeling in ANY WAY, any kind of cautious optimism about this election is a sign of unseriousness and apathy.

18. If Senator Obama was guilty of incautious gloating, then you'd have a point.
But he isn't, and neither is anyone involved with his campaign. As far as what goes on here, it's just people expressing optimism. I don't see any evidence that this optimism is occuring at the expense of campaign-related effort. If it were, then there would be a problem. But I just don't see that. Most everyone seems to understand what the task at hand is, and I have not read one post yet saying that this will be easy.

Edited on Thu Oct-16-08 12:41 PM by nichomachus
People who haven't been around politics for very long don't often understand how quickly things can change.

In politics, a week is an eternity.

Three weeks before the Iowa causes in 2004, Howard Dean was an "unbeatable front runner."

13. There have been a lot of online victory dances and "we've won" cheers
Or, more accurately, "McCain is toast" cheers, which is the same thing.

I don't think a little "keep up the good fight" is a bad thing.

It's a natural human reaction to let up a little if you think you've got a commanding lead. We need to fight that impulse.

I just went and donated some more to Obama -- just because he's pulling ahead.

17. Everyone is just enthusiastic and upbeat.
Maybe we Dems are so used to losing that we don't want to jinx it this time. But from what I've been able to see, everyone here is working hard and, when claiming McCain is toast, is just being enthusiastic. I think any attempt to dampen that enthusiasm is counterproductive.

11. Senator Obama begs to differ
Obama Invokes Granite State Lessons

“For those of you who are feeling giddy or cocky or think this is all set, I just have two words for you: New Hampshire. I’ve been in these positions before when we were favored, and the press starts getting carried away and we end up getting spanked.”

I understand the sentiment, but surely if you feel posting such threads is misdirected energy, posting a "don't post" thread is doubly squandered time and effort.

15. It's not squandered at all.
I think everyone here is working hard and focused on the next three weeks. Telling these same people, who have volunteered, given money, and given of themselves, not to get complacent is annoying as hell. It's like piloting a Cessna while the passenger behind you kicks your seat every twenty seconds and screams "We're going to crash!!!!"

I don't see any evidence, anywhere, of a flagging effort on the part of the DU community.

Seeing people repeat the same things over and over and over and over around here gets kinda boring. And rabid mass piling-on whenever a newb says a sentence or two that sound unsure is just plain hateful. and weird.

20. NO SHIT! I am also so tired of being derided.....
as if we are not pounding the pavement all day long. I have signed up 47 people that didn't feel like signing up because they simply didn't have a way to the polls in a blue county in a red state. Does it ultimately help Obama in the larger scheme of things, probably not, but does it help empower voters, HELL YES.

We're all doing what we can and don't need the constant consternation of those putting our good will efforts down as if the most of us our not doing our fair share. Fuck that.

21. Maybe no one here is
but I know people who will show up on election day to long lines and go home because the polls show Obama way ahead and my one vote won't hurt him. I have to continue to encourage people to go out and vote and fight like we are behind.
There are many things all of us can do for Obama than post on any thread. However, there are many folks who lurk on DU, posting on threads is one way to get the message out. I am cautiously optimistic but we haven't won it as yet.

28. On Olberman, Mellissa Harris-Lacewell said....
and I'm paraphrasing...

If people that are leaning Obama but aren't very enthusiastic supporters, (for reasons of race prejudice or whatEVER), believe that Obama has it "in the bag," they might stay home on November 4th. This could LOOK like the dreaded "Bradley Effect," but in fact would be something quite different.

Complacency

Although I agree, this is a non-issue here on DU, and mostly represents fear/PTSD from 2000 and 2004 (or "concern trolling"), the opinion's of Professor Harris-Lacewell pack a LOT OF CREDIBILITY with me.

Although I do believe it's unimportant to post it on DU, I'm deferring to greater minds than mine.

31. You're basically agreeing with me.
I think it's ridiculous to post it here. No one here is complacent about this election, or any other, for that matter. I agree that the average, non-enthusiastic voter needs quite a lot of prodding, but doing it here is useless and annoying.

Anyone who's worried about voter complacency should be working on their friends, families, and anyone else whose support might be "soft." Doing it here discounts a lot of the work that people have done, and will continue doing, tirelessly, right up through election day.

they can't afford to be with their pensions, jobs, houses, everything crashing around them.
