4. Give the guy a chance to put things right..
that's more than most repubs would do. I'll withhold further judgment until I hear what he has to say. I'll have a hard time ever trusting him though.

12. If it ends up helping Obama in any significant way, I'll take it...
I would not support his having a major role in an Obama administration, but if this helps him clear his conscience and get on the right side of history, so be it.

8. Another DUer who misses the big picture

We KNOW he sucks.

But Independents, in poll after poll after poll, absolutely LOVE the guy.

Obama already HAS our vote. A Powell endorsment means GAME OVER. Indies swing to Obama in HUGE numbers.

It takes any "perceived" momentum for McCain out of the headlines.

It's a 3-day news cycle win for Obama.

PLEASE see the big picture and not your own hangups.

15. I see the big picture
but it doesn't mean he doesn't suck.

However, you're absolutely right -- he won't mean much to those of us who already support Obama, but he will draw in a lot of liberal Republicans who are afraid of McCain and independents who idolize Powell.

the reasoning will be that if Powell can vote for Obama, then it's safe for them to.

17. Well said, scheming daemons.
Some people just don't get how a Powell endorsement for Obama effects McCain's chances of pulling out anything close to a victory.

You are exactly correct. It doesn't matter one smidgen what people who are already going to vote for Obama think about it. It's what it does for the undecideds who are waiting for precisely something like this to tip them over.

13. Back in 2007, before Obama got the nomination...
and before McCain reinvented himself as a neocon.

14. Please remind undecided voters of that as well as Republicans who might be swayed
if Powell was to endorse Obama. It's stupid to bite off your nose to spite your face. Be real and recognize that millions of people in this country still admire Powell and if his endorsement of Obama brings our candidate vote, then save the "screw Colin Powell" because it doesn't help anything.

to think and whom to support.

I think it's true. As mighty as he may appear to many, he's trained not to think for himself.

18. Agreed. That guy is the biggest traitor to the American people.
He had the clout, the respectability, and the power to put a stop to the madness that was the Bush Administration. Instead he let us suffer for the following 4 extra years. His word means nothing. Plus he's an alma mater of my school...you'd think we would still praise him. There's a group of us that see him as the criminal cohort he is.

19. If he endorses Obama...the past is forgotten as far as I'm concerned...
I'm not going to hold any of it against him. I would forgive Powell and he would be respectable in my eyes.

If he endorses McCain or doesn't endorse anyone at all...then no. Powell will never gain any respect from me. It will show that Powell is still holding onto the republicans and their way of thinking which got us into the mess we're in right now.
