Republicans are despicable
I'm 27 and the Republicans I know became repukes just like I became a Cubs fan and Bears fan. It was ingrained through my father. My Dad, God rest his soul, was a big time Republican. As a kid the first time I recognized anything about politics was on interstate 55 being pulled over as the motorcade of Bush/Quayle 88 went by. I waved like a schmuck like everyone else did, I at least had the excuse of being 7 years old at the time. I grew up and developed a mind of my own and the first time I realized how dumb Republicans were was when my Dad hung up a Dole/Kemp sign in his house when I was 15. I made fun of him at the time and he knew I wasn't going to be brainwashed into being a Repuke. In the 2000 Election, My first that I could vote in, I let him know all about Ralph and why I'd vote for him. He of course voted Bush. I'm not sure if he would've voted Bush in 2004 but I assume he would. He had a heart attack in May of 2004 and passed on to the unpolitical afterlife, at least I hope the afterlife is unpolitical. But I really think after the last four years and the current economic crisis that would've completely ruined his 401k, he would've saw his err in voting Republican all these years and would have voted for Barack Obama.

Anywho, Most repukes I know have no mind of their own, but are ingrained from very young to be Republicans similar to being a fan of a sports team. Pathetic really.

1. my daughter realized that.. her friends who call themselves repubs have no reasons for it..
they just have parents who are. When they have political discussions, they are the ones that really know nothing about the issues, and have no understanding of the world or politics... but they're parents are repubs. The dem kids seem to be more in tune with what's going on, know exactly why they support the dems, and most likely are already doing volunteer work with the homeless, the environment, and social justice.

Glad you came around to this way of thinking.

And RIP to your Dad. If there is a political afterlife, I would imagine he's looking down upon you and is happy you'd never vote for McCain... I'm sure the view from up there is much clearer, if you know what I mean.

3. Thank you so much
my Dad was a great funny guy, but he was a Republican. I wish I could talk to him now that I'm older and more knowledgeable about the world and politics, to see how he came to be a Repub. He was in the Army stationed in Germany during Vietnam and so he never faced any combat. It's really a mystery to me as to how he felt about the whole conflict but I pretty sure he wasn't a peace activist or anything. I should try to look into his background to see how he was. I have a big chest with all his stuff from back then in one of my Mom and Stepdad's sheds. I threw it in there after he died not wanting to go through it at the time. I need to check out what's in there. It's been long enough.

7. First - so sorry for your loss of your dad
That's too young to lose your father.

Second - I suspect that I was indoctrinated . . . by totally left leaning parents. To some degree I'm an informed voter - but another degree . . . my politics were ingrained on me as a kid. It wouldn't have been easy on me when my dad spent the majority of life (1980-1992) SCREAMING at the t.v. on a nightly basis at "That man is acting the fool" and having my mom say "Whatever Reagan/Bush is for I'm against." And she said it with pride.

I think it happens on both sides - but FWIW - my parents are still very progressive people with a 'whole' world view of human beings.

Thanks for sharing! :pals:

8. Thanks JustAnotherGen
Upbringing has alot to do with everyones political leanings. I didn't know my parent's leanings until Presidential election years, even then they weren't overly vocal about it, they just made it known who they were voting for. Actually my Stepdad would never even say who he voted for. I knew he usually voted Republican but he'd never come out and say it. My Mom would always sell him out. I assume most parents of kids are like that, I learned on my own, which I think was invaluable and wouldn't want it any other way. I really do feel bad for kids that were taught to be Republicans. It makes me angry and volatile towards good friends who are Repukes that don't know any better.
