Ideas for commercials for Kerry. Lets brainstorm!
Lets brainstorm and come up with ideas for commercials and hopefully someone high up in the Kerry campaign will pick out a few that might have an impact. Can anyone get these to the Kerry campaign????

I have several ideas:

1. Groupthink

Commercial starts with ominous background music and then a narrator comes in and says something like this:

The textbook definition of groupthink is, "The tendency of highly cohesive groups to assume that their decisions can't be wrong: that all members must support the group’s decision and ignore information contrary to it: feeling that the group is infallible and morally superior, that there should be no more discussion of the issues at hand, and the only task now is to support it as strongly as possible."

Sadly, that definition also describes the dynamics in the Bush administration in our march into war with Iraq. (Show clips of everyone talking about WM D's) President Bush admits to not having independent sources of news, and information, relying solely on closest advisor's. Those in the administration who voice different opinions and concerns are sanctioned with negative feedback, marginalization and dismissal. (O'Neil, Powell as well as numerous other generals and all the dissenters.) "Mind guarding" is the norm.

The problem is that groupthink reduces critical thinking, potentially resulting in poor decisions, with disastrous consequences. (Show Iraq swamp and continued violence.)

Can we afford another four more years of Groupthink from the most powerful administration in the world?

2. Something with Bush as a puppet (we have to dismantle this image of a strong leader and reduce Bush into a figurehead)Perhaps show him in the classroom after the second plane crashed into the twin towers.

3. More use of simple Fraze's:

Bush is trying to create an image of a guy who is strong, focused, unwavering guided by moral clarity. We have to expose him as weak, a puppet, stupid, caught up in groupthink, a draft dodger, thinks he is morally superior to anyone who does not think like he does, shallow, unsophisticated, born with a silver spoon in his mouth, out of touch with the average American and the poor, insensitive and finally, irrational because he will not change direction no matter how bad things are going.

1. I really like the puppet idea.
I've been thinking for a long time that something like the famous LBJ ad of the girl picking daisies would be appropriate. An actual puppet of Bush could be shown, and the ad could ask something like, "Do you really think that the future of the world should be left in the hands of a puppet? Do you really want to risk this for four more years?" The ad should imply or outright state that Bush could lead the world into nuclear war in the next four years.

2. 60 minutes tonight
Get former TX Lt.Gov Ben Barnes to cut a commercial talking about what he will talk about on 60 minutes tonight

The Republican campaign gets ready for shock waves, as the former Texas official who says he pulled strings to get George W. Bush into the Air National Guard finally goes public

Ben Barnes, the former lieutenant governor of Texas, will finally break his silence and talk to the press about what role he played in helping Bush get a coveted slot in the Texas Air National Guard in 1968. Sources say Barnes has already sat down for a "60 Minutes" interview that will air next week

Over the weekend, the national press, which for weeks has been amplifying factually challenged allegations against John Kerry by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, gave Barnes' stunning remarks only cursory coverage. The Washington Post, for instance, ran a brief wire story on Saturday, the same day it printed yet another exhaustive piece about allegations surrounding Kerry's war past. In a subsequent WashingtonPost.com online chat, the Post reporter covering the Swift boat story suggested Barnes' comments didn't qualify as "fresh information," and consequently he wasn't interested in "simply regurgitating old controversies." The New York Times ran a brief item on Barnes' statements deep inside its Saturday news section, next to yet another lengthy profile of Kerry's longtime Swift boat nemesis, John O'Neill.

Rather than offering insight into Bush's so-called missing year, Barnes has firsthand knowledge of how Bush was able to get into the Guard. During the Vietnam War, Guard members were rarely called up for duty in Vietnam, making it a top choice among those seeking to avoid serving in wartorn Southeast Asia. (On his Air Force pilot application, when asked about an overseas assignment, Bush checked "do not volunteer.") In fact, Bush's Guard unit was known as the Champagne Unit, because among its members were sons of prominent Texas politicians and businessmen.

3. Vietnam Girlie-Men commercial
Start off with picture of John Kerry. Voice-over and script says
Silver Star, Bronze Star, Three Purple Hearts. Next, picture of G.W.
Bush, voice-over and script says Vietnam Girlie Man. Continue with Cheney, Rove and a couple of other chicken-hawks calling them vietnam

6. OBL flip flop.
Shrub saying OBL dead or alive and a film of him saying I don't care, it's not important. This HAS to be a commercial. We have to use his own words against him. There are plenty to choose from.

7. How about one asking about Bush* refusing an order to take a physical
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 10:11 AM by Bandit
How about a Military Flight Surgeon Officer asking "Where is Lt Bush*,He does know this is a required exam."
and then cut to a young Bush* snorting coke and partying and saying " I don't need to do their stuff, I'm George Bush* and I only joined the Guard to get out of going to Nam". Then pan the Vietnam war memorial. With a voice over saying did not have connections and did their duty.

8. "Are You Safer?" advertisement
Bush at campaign rally: "The American people are safer!"

Cut to an image of police beating protesters at New York: "The PATRIOT Act, supported by Bush, strips Americans of many of their basic civil rights."

Cut to an unemployment line in Ohio: "Bush's failed economic policies have eroded the financial security of American families."

Cut to archival footage of Osama bin Laden: "And Bush has yet to find the architect of September 11."

Cut to footage of an angry Bush storming off the podium: "Are you safer, America?"

9. End the fear
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 10:22 AM by Onlooker
Bush: "Can we win? I don't think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that the -- those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world."

Kerry: You do not want to live in fear. The war on terrorism can and must be won so that we can feel safe again. But, it will take more than military action. It will take the same commitment to technology that led to the economic boom we had under Clinton. It will take the same commitment to building international coalitions that kept us safe after the first Iraq war. It will take a commitment diplomacy to reach out to those who wrongly believe we're the enemy. It will take making new friends who can warn us of danger and work with us to stop troubled people from becoming terrorists.

Narrator: It will take leadership. John Kerry for President.

11. Does this Make us Safer? Ad
I posted this here yesterday but I am reposting it, with some additions.

Here is the ad:

George Bush claims we are safer under his leadership.

George Bush feverishly told us Saddam and al Qaida were allies and that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction ready to use against us. None of this was true. He continues to claim that Saddam was a great and gathering threat to Americans. This has been disproven by the 9/11 Commission, the UN, the international weapons inspectors, and the total lack of any evidence whatsoever. He brought us into a bloody and dangerous war on false pretenses and, disastrously, had no plan once we got there.

Does this make us safer?

According to a Pew Research poll done in December 2002 and a follow-up released on June 3, 2003, dangerously negative feelings and intense anger toward the US has sharply risen during the administration of George Bush in all parts of the world, and most especially in Arab countries.

Does this make us safer?

Following the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, large stockpiles of nuclear material, usable in dirty bombs, were left unguarded for several weeks and were vandalized.

Does this make us safer?

A vast network of nuclear stockpiles in the nations of the former Soviet Union remains largely unguarded and vulnerable to theft.. A great deal of this dangerous material is already unaccounted for. Having canceled the Clinton administration's policy for protecting these sites, George Bush has done little to rectify this dangerous situation.

Does this make us safer?

President George W. Bush withdrew the United States from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty, the cornerstone of international arm control since 1972, in order to pursue a missile defense system that has yet been shown to actually work.

Does this make us safer?

Since the advent of the Iraq War, according to many authorities, the number of angry, jihadist terrorist recruits has greatly increased, and the number of terrorist incidents and casualties worldwide has multiplied dramatically.

Does this make us safer?

America’s military forces are stretched extremely thin and recruitment levels are way down, leaving us vulnerable in case of any emergency situation demanding a strong military response.

Does this make us safer?

George Bush has taken a XXX billion dollar surplus and turned it into a XXX billion dollar deficit, in great part due to his massive tax cuts during a time of war. Unless something is done soon to counteract this irresponsible economic policy, America's strength will be crippled by a massive burden of debt for decades to come.

Does this make us safer?

Can we afford four more years?

John Kerry will bring us a strong and sane foreign policy and a responsible economic program, and will rekindle the world’s trust in and respect for America. THIS is what will make us safer.

12. Mockery.
Which the Republicans have been using effectively for some time.

Example:

George Bush on screen making one or several of his more ludicrous statements (Dead or Alive/I don't know or care where Osama is; trip to Mars; trifecta; etc., too many choices to mention). Same w/other Republicans (Trent Lott calling Kerry "French"; bandaids at convention).

Follow up with words or voice over: "Are you SERIOUS?"

Short closing message about serious issues facing the country, while Republicans are saying dumb things and focusing on trivial matters. Vote for a serious candidate, JK.

Sorry, I don't do PR. Somebody would have to polish this concept.

13. A possible "Aduts Only" ad
A stationary head shot of a porn actress, fully clothed:

"Hello, I'm Barbi Bushmills. I work in the adult film industry, and I'm often double-teamed by two great-looking guys during filming. It's how I make a living, yes, but I still enjoy it. What I don't enjoy is how Bush and Cheney have double-teamed our nation. There's nothing good about it at all - what these two have done is more like the rape of America. And all of us are hurt by their recklessness. That's why I support John Kerry for President. He knows how to treat Lady Liberty right. And apologies to Teresa - but I think he's cute."

14. Here's my idea
"Critics of presidential nominee John Kerry have called him unfit for command."

"These same critics praise President Bush's response to the 9/11 attack as his finest moment."

"Maybe these critics haven't seen the President's response to being told 'the country is under attack' on 9/11"

Then cut to the footage of Andy Card whispering to Bush and then Bush just sitting there with that god damn blank look on his face.

Then after some elapsed time of the footage, end the ad with "Next time, we may not have 7 minutes"

Okay, it's dark and threatening and not positive and uplifting and probably would backfire but I'd just really like for there to be someway for the American public to see Bush just sitting there looking like a deer in the headlights while our country was under attack. That one moment in the Bush presidency contradicts all the hype of his cowboy tough guy image IMHO.

17. Two ideas:
Edited on Sun Sep-05-04 10:53 AM by amBushed
1. Split screen showing Chimpy sitting in classroom on one side, WTC on the other with an clock. Card comes in and tells Chimp we are under attack. Speeded up to get all seven minutes into a 30 second spot--showing the Chimperor's lost expression all the while. The only sound from NYC that morning. Ending line: "Real leaders don't just sit there."

2. Kerry sitting at a table which has 3 Purple Hearts, 1 Bronze Star, and 1 Silver Star. Behind him a backdrop of American Flags. Kerry is dressed in a casual shirt, no suit or tie. He looks at the camera and says:

"In times of emergency, many Americans eagerly volunteer to serve their country. Like them, I too enlisted during the Vietnam era. I certainly didn't have to. At the time, I could have used the various deferments available to avoid service as most of my Republican critics did. I did not do that because I wanted to serve my country and I knew if I didn't go, someone else would have to go in my place."

(Kerry then goes on to briefly explain why he got the medals).

"There are those who for partisan reasons are distorting the facts of my service. They are liars. They weren't there with me. The men who were there know the truth. I am proud to have been their skipper and I am proud of my service."

"Leadership is about knowing the right thing to do and then showing others the way. It is not about doing whatever you want and manipulating people by fear and deception into following."
