" I thought I'd pass on an anecdote about my daughter and other kids I've come into contact with during this ungodly long election cycle.

I voted for McCain in the primary. As a political reporter and columnist in Michigan, I have the Obamascottmorgangetty_2 news on in our house with some frequency. That's how my now 6-year-old got to know Barack Obama. And she loved him. She asked to tag along when I went to cover his events. Maybe it's the smile, the calmness. But she felt very assured by the idea of this man being president, long before I was ready to switch my vote. She was the one trying to convince her grandparents to vote Obama last winter.

And I've found that Obama has the same effect on lots of kids, whether they come from liberal or conservative homes. He is a rock star with the under 10 crowd, believe me. And I have to say, as a journalist, I found their reactions fascinating in light of both the race debate and the fact that kids tend to be carbon copies of their parents. So that Scholastic poll doesn't surprise me at all.

So the next time you see a kid with an Obama shirt, she just might have asked for it for her birthday, like mine, instead of having it foisted upon her by overbearing parents."

Finally, the perfect role model for them is standing there, looking like them. I can only try to imagine just how profoundly Obama is changing the American psyche. Those children would not only not ever look at a white man or woman like that, but they would also not be there at all. The kids in those photos have no idea what is showing so brightly in their faces. And Obama gets to see that every single day. No wonder he keeps his cool. These little faces must be giving him a strength he didn't know he had and keeping his vision of change fresh.

Whenever you see a picture of Obama and a child, he is mirroring the child's facial expression. It's something that parents do all the time unconsciously, and it's seen as an indicator of adequate bonding, it helps the child learn social skills, etc. It's just incredible to me that Obama does this with virtually every child he comes in contact with.
Not sure it's terribly significant in any way, but still cool in my opinion.:)

I never noticed that until you pointed it out, but going back over the pictures I can see it clearly. Might just be that Obama has a whole lot more empathy for his fellow human beings than the average Repug does. That could go far in explaining his skill as a negotiator.

and his behavior with babies leads me to think that it is something which is just intuitive with him, not something he drums up or does for effect. He is gifted in so many ways, and we are so blessed to have him as our future President.

And it has to be said that in Obama rallies there is a great deal of joy and babies pick up the happiness they feel around them. In McCain and Palin rallies there is a great deal of hate and anger and their babies reflect that too. It not just Obama who causes the babies to be feel comfortable, thought he does his part like any good father would.
