The former Bush Secretary of State crosses party lines to endorse Obama, citing his "ability to inspire and lead." Also says McCain's negative campaigning has "gone too far" and he's concerned about his choice of Palin as running mate.
Makes the announcement on Sunday's "Meet the Press." Says he plans to vote-- but not campaign-- for Obama.
Says outside the NBC studio: "I think that Sen. Obama brings a fresh set of eyes, a fresh set of ideas to the table.... I think we need a generational change, and I think Sen. Obama has captured the feelings of the young people of America, and is reaching out in a more diverse, inclusive way across our society."
"Sen. Obama has demonstrated the kind of calm, patient, intellectual, steady approach to problem-solving that I think we need in this country."
Response from RNC spokesman Danny Diaz: "Endorsements are great, but at the end of the day that's not what decisions are based on."
