Obama Addresses N.C. Voter Who Called Him "Socialist - CBS News
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/10/19/politics/fromtheroad/entry4531309.shtml

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - John McCain’s charges that Barack Obama is socialist may be resonating with some voters.

At a BBQ stop this afternoon, Obama received an unwelcome greeting from one woman who yelled “socialist, socialist, socialist – get out of here!” as he met with other customers.

The woman, Diane Fanning, who works at Sam’s Club, then asked the Democratic nominee about the North American Union, which he opposes.

“I know some people have been hearing rumors about it. But as far as I can tell that’s just not something that’s happening. We would never give up our sovereignty in that way. Any other questions?” Obama asked Fanning.

She reluctantly responded, “No, I’m not going to say it.”

At a rally after the stop, Obama brought up McCain’s accusations that his tax plan is a form of socialism and dismissed it as a political attack.

“He has been attacking the heck out of me,” Obama said, “Lately, he and Governor Palin actually accused me of socialism. Socialism. It’s kind of hard to figure how Warren Buffet endorsed me, Colin Powell endorsed me and John McCain thinks I’m practicing socialism.”

I'm glad to see Obama confronted this Fanning lady.

3. I doubt that she could even explain what socialism is if she was
asked. Another one of those idiots who just like to run their mouth.

5. I was thinking the same thing. I don't PERSONALLY like socialism as a main form of government BUT
it isn't THAT bad? I mean... come on... they act like socialism is the same as totalitarianism.

And aren't they doing better in many if not most quality-of-life measures?

18. I think it is a code word for "giving the blacks everthing by taking everything away
from the whites."

Of course, they don't have the foggiest idea about what socialism is. It's all racist, all the time now with these people.

Obama was actually smart to go to that diner. It highlights exactly what McCain's people look like and think and say and it is UGLY. This plays into Obama's hand very nicely...

4. How can Obama "oppose" the North American Union?
There is no such thing, never has been, never will be. This despite the low-information person at a recent party who warned me about the NAU and the Amero and the "100-lane highway" straight from Canada to Mexico.

19. Do the people who believe those e-mails also respond to the Nigerian scams?
It takes a certain kind of mind to be absolutely convinced by something in an anonymously-written e-mail, and then to cling to that belief even in the face of overwhelming evidence against it. Yet it happens every day.

9. more about his talk with Fanning
Fanning asked Obama about a North American union, and Obama responded: “Well, you know, I am opposed to it if it were happening. But it doesn’t seem to be actually be happening. The truth of the matter is there is no plans. I’ve talked to a lot of people, including folks down in Texas. There’s no plan to create a common government between Mexico, U.S. and Canada. That’s just not … that’s just not happening. I know some people have been hearing rumors about it. But as far as I can tell, that’s just not something that’s happening. We would never give up our sovereignty in that way. Any other questions?

In an interview, Fanning said, “I still think he’s a closet Muslim.”

13. THIS is what a leader does. McCain's campaign won't even let their "VP" watch bad news, much less
try to handle a direct confrontation with a voter who opposes them. It's ridiculous that McCain/Palin is nearly as competitive in this election as the MSM is trying to make them out to be. There is no character, strength, honor or leadership on that ticket.

14. "Socialist", "Muslim", "Terrorist" have been designated "safe words" to spout rather than
(....and you know what I'm going to say...) the n-word. Once these words are dispensed with and correctly defined, the n-word will be out in full force.

23. I think this is more sad than anything else
You can attack this woman for being stupid - and its justified - but that's just the surface. She's a symptom of the deeper problem, the one Powell brought up in his endorsement of Obama when he pointed out that society treats the accusation of being a Muslim as something to deny outright rather than ask why that is a bad thing.

The woman works at Sam's Club, aka WalMart. Same thing essentially. Like the infamous Joe the Plumber, she has been conditioned and indoctrinated into thinking that she's actually got a shot at the American Dream, that "socialism", sharing the wealth, somehow means taking something away from her - as if she has anything to take.

We have lived with this intentional, evil-minded divisiveness for 8 long years. The seeds have always been there but they have been carefully fanned by this Republican administration and its adherents. Like past political parties that preyed on xenophobia and hate, they have tried (and largely succeeded) to confuse the masses while they reap the benefits.

Enough is enough. I agree behavior and attitudes like that are despicable and absurd but more than the woman herself, I despise the political atmosphere that has been feeding those attitudes. I'm ready for change, and whether she knows it or not, Diane Fanning is too.

26. Stories like this make me nervous
The more I read about Obama having one-on-one contact with these brainwashed right wing nut jobs, the more nervous I get for his safety. I'm just waiting for one of these inflamed morons to attack him physically. I am happy that Obama will go out and talk to people like that, but... I just hope the secret service is doing a good job protecting him!
