What Obama's decison to go to Hawaii means to me
We've heard a from Sen. McCain talking about how he is a "country first" man. He has chastised Obama for being more willing to lose a war to win an election. He's said he cares more about getting elected president than he does about the country he is attempting to govern.

Of course we knew none of that was true. But what Obama has done today is to show that he's a "family first" man at a moment that will certainly go down as the most important moment of his life.

I wish Obama didn't have to leave the trail. I will worry about what if any effect this will have on the race in the key states he was supposed to visit. And most of all, I wish his grandmother wasn't so ill.

But some things have to wait. Obama just gave us all another glimpse into what makes him such a wonderful man. Thank you, Senator.

1. You are so right; his priorities are where they should be, and I think
most people will be able to relate to that.

3. Also, this is the last time in several years that Barack Obama will not be President of the US.
This may be the last time for a long time that he will be free to make a decision like this. (Though I'm sure he will continue to have his priorities straight.)

5. Apparently he's cancelling stops in IA and WI, but *adding* a stop in Indiana
It's striking me as odd that Rachel is asking about how much this could affect the momentum of the campaign given the states where the stops are cancelled; I'd be a little more disappointed if he had to cancel in OH or FL or MO.

But it goes without saying that he's doing the right thing, and everyone but the most unsympathetic of characters would understand.

A commenter on Rachel's show just made a good point that it could hamper the McCain camp's opportunity to smear Obama while he's off the campaign trail for this reason - otherwise they could be in for more backlash. Are the McCain staff stupid and/or inept enough to try it anyway?

Adding that Michelle will add stops in OH and another state. That speaks to how "deep" the Obama bench is. Could the McCain campaign cover for each other that way?

8. It will have ZERO effect.
Obama supporters aren't that shallow, and I resent even the implication of that. I'm actually shocked that the question is being raised at all. This is his family. The campaign will survive, and it won't cost him any votes.

And at the time this was posted, it was unknown what states he would be missing rallies. Lighten the fuck up.

18. No problem, but seriously....
can you imagine any of us, or even a potential voter would bolt because he's going to see his grandmother?? I think more people will see him as more human. If someone changed their mind over this, I would have to say they were never really a supporter.

26. It's not that any voters are going to bolt
it's all the voters he won't be able to reach while he's out here. Remember, he just drew 175,000 at two rallies at opposite ends of MO, while McLoser drew, um, dozens.

I don't think people who are 'on the fence' go to those. Not in any great numbers anyway....

20. I'd be willing to bet there may even be at least a few
undecideds who are touched by this and maybe even swayed. Some people vote for character rather than solely on issues. If anything, I think it has the potential to have a positive effect.

16. Family First
I thought that very thing when I was watching McCain (or a surrogate?) give his speech about Country First. It sounded so nazi-like. And I thought, it s/b "Family First."

I pray Obama will have a save trip and that his grandma will get well. Bless 'em both.

what a creep she is.

I pray for his grandma; I know how important she is to him. My heart goes out to his family and to him.

Stay strong, Barrack and take the time out that you need. A man with the soul who puts family first is the man to lead this country.

23. The creepy repuke Gov of Hawaii, linda lingle, was
in Colorado last week saying Obama wasn't really from Hawai'i.

She's into burning bridges or something.

This is from DUer mahina's thread on Saturday..

"Hi. Gov. Lingle warns a crowd of tens that Obama will endanger America.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 06:44 PM by mahina
You may have heard that our Governor, Linda Lingle, is working her flat butt off for McCain.
She introduces Sarah Palin, she's on the road hawking the fear message, she's even gone so far
as to say that Sen. Obama, born and raised here, isn't really local. (Unlike herself, who moved here as an adult. But whatever.)

The Las Vegas Sun published a telling photo of her speaking to a throng of - several - people about how dangerous Obama would be for America. The writer mentioned that they took chairs away before she began speaking, presumably so it didn't look so poorly attended. FAIL.

What you may not know is that Linda Lingle was expected to run for US Senator when either of our Dans retires. But her recent hatefests make a win look less and less likely in this state, that went more than 72% Obama in our caucus.

Thank God all the work here at home is done and we aren't in a budget crisis or anything. Oh wait...she also announced from the road that she's ending our program to insure poor children."

The Obama campaign will be fine.

Obama is showing what his values are. I am waiting for the McCain/Palin to make another fatal mistake by attacking Obama for going to see his very sick grandmother.

My prayers are with the Obama family!

I sincerely hope that his grandmother gets to officially hear that her little boy has been elected the 44th President of the United States. Although I don't know the extent of her illness and if she's been coherent or not the last few weeks I'm sure that in her heart she's known all along.
