The conservative mentality
So I send my conservative brother in law some information on McCain and Palin, it included Palin's record in Alaska, some of McCain's past and a video of McCain saying contradictory statements about many of his positions. When I saw him at a family get-together on Sunday I asked him "Did you check out the info in the email I sent"? He said no he didn't, he didn't want to know because he had to vote republican anyway!

Anyone else run into this type of attitude?

1. Willful ignorance
You cannot make them think for themselves, even when shown the facts.

They know only what they want to know in order to justify themselves, reality just confuses them.

'Magical Thinking' is a big factor with these type of people.

2. Sort of.
Different issues in this conversation.

Harleydad spent 2 hours on the phone last night with his fundie brother. Gave him a wealth of information, but fundie brother is convinced that gay people are sinners and that means he has to vote Republican. He relies on Dobson to tell him what to believe because he's so "humble" that he doesn't think he's smart enough to interpret the Bible on his own. (My guess is that harleydad got all the brains in his family.) Um, OK. Then there's that pesky abortion issue. Fundie brother thinks pro-choice means pro-abortion. When confronted with the fact that abortion rates actually go down under Democratic presidents, he goes back to his Dobson defense. There is NO talking to him. Most of the family is like that. I don't know how harleydad can stand it.

3. when people want to remain dumb there's not much you can do to
persuade them. Some will venture into enlightenment and others will roam the dark. I say my peace and they say what kind of mumbo jumbo that falls out of their piehole. In the end I can't help but find myself laughing at the preposterousness of their statements.
