I guess we're all Socialists now...
:eyes:

Kinda funny since my SO, a life-long Republican recently turned Democrat, used to call me that in jest. Now the tables are turned, lol. It's been a joke here this election season. Now I get to say, "Well, looks like you're a Socialist, too, now!!"

Local GOP races are using this, too. In our local Congressional District race, incumbent Dean Heller (R) called challenger Jill Derby (D), a Socialist during a debate last night. Unfortunately, she was so caught off guard, she didn't really know how to respond. At one point, she muttered, "...well, I don't know what I am, but..."

Can you imagine if Democrats were to call Republicans Fascists during national media interviews or during debates? We'd be called the fringe radicals and would be laughed at. She needs to get her talking points together. Jeesh.

1. Just like they made Liberal
a dirty word, they are trying to pin another word on us that has communist connotations. Actually Jesus was a liberal and a socialist. It only means you have respect and dignity for human life first and profits second and not the other way around. We should take care of each other first and foremost.

2. Think about it! Being a Liberal is no longer a slur.... Its being a Socialist now!

The liberal slur no longer has the power that it did and so now they have to use the word Socialist.

That's a huge step in changing consciouness.
I think a national paradigm has been broken this week thanks to McCain's stupidity
McCain and his campaign has destroyed Reagan talking points used for years by the right without even knowing it.

4. Nothing wrong with that...
I see no need to apologize to show compassion towards others less fortunate than myself, and to extend a hand to those in need.

My new comeback to anyone accusing Obama, the Democrats specifically or in general, or even myself of being "Liberal", or even "Socialist" is: "Damn right I am. You have a problem with that?" Then just let them choke on it and figure out how to counter it.

OTL...

3. The people who are nationalizing banks and buying homes
are calling us socialist. This would be funny if it weren't insane. McCain wants to buy the mortgages of millions of Americans, putting them in de-facto public housing until their equity exceeds the amount they owe, but he calls Obama a socialist. Get real.

5. i think its backfiring big time
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 10:18 AM by iamthebandfanman
i dont think anyone except the right wingers see the word as an evil thing anymore.

socialism is way more of an accepted term that the ole 'commie' they used to use...commie isnt relevant anymore tho so they are trying socialist..but it just aint gonna stick this time.

i mean, they r guilty of corporate socialism anyway.
if anything, i think this will not only lose the election for them but also rejuvenate the perception of socialism in a good way

6. All I can say is
I could never, ever... EVER be married or have a relationship with a Republican. Impossible.

Republicans don't know what fascist means. If they did, they would embrace it and quit calling Muslims "Islamofascists"

I hope your SO understands that we live in a society which employs a mix of capitalism and socialism - paying taxes for the betterment of the republic is a form of socialism. i.e. schools, roads, infrastructure are results of socialism and how paying in is for the betterment of the people.

12. My Republican has always been a closet Liberal, imho
so it's really not that big of a deal between us. All the more reason I enjoy the teasing now, though, just to get a little dig in here and there. It's all in jest.

I think there are a lot of registered Republicans out there who really aren't the brand of Republican that you are referring to.

7. I remember my liberal dad saying
back in the reagan years, things like: "Stuff like that makes me want to be a socialist" and "They're driving me to socialism". I think he would laugh at the use of the word if he were alive today.

He was a liberal, who served his country in the Korean war, used the GI bill to become an educator, owned guns for sport and occasionally hunting, and was a straight-arrow patriot. When he talked about the advantages of socialized democracy, I listened.

8. One of the funny things about this "spread the wealth"
soundbite that McCain has pounced on is that while it isn't true in the first place, the fact is in this environment it sounds a lot different than it would have a decade ago. The wealth divide is greater than its ever been since the 1920s and the average joe who barely has a pot to piss in just bailed out Wall Streeters and corporate executives who make more in a year than they'll make in a hundred lifetimes. So even to some of the dumb bitter Limbaugh crowd I would imagine they think "yeah, it is about time rich people shared some of the wealth. We just shared ours with them". I mean it just sounds like a silly thing to campaign against when we've just spent a trillion dollars to concentrate more wealth at the top.
