JTP: "I wouldn't feel right about accepting a tax cut if I knew it meant higher taxes for..."
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 10:56 AM by Kurt_and_Hunter
"I wouldn't feel right about accepting a tax cut if I knew it meant higher taxes for people who work harder or had gotten better breaks in life than me."

Joe the Plumber said this several times last night.

Only in "Real America" does rugged individualism equal belligerent acquiescence to peasantry. (Is he afraid of offending the God of "breaks" who made the rich rich? Is this about preserving Karma? We know Joe is a nut-right Christian but I cannot find anything in the Good Book to support the "divine right of breaks" theory.)

Would Joe the Plumber feel comfortable accepting an insurance check if his house burned down, knowing it would mean higher premiums for people whose houses didn't burn down?

Discuss.

1. Did you see him on Hannity?
I read that he said he'd been on welfare at one point, and was complaining about losing child care assistance.

11. Yes, he was on with Sean (wearing a suit but no flag pin!!!)
I didn't catch the welfare part but I was flipping around.

2. Are you sure he said "better breaks?"
It sound kind of weird. Yes, there is something rather acquiescent encouraged by the REpublican party. Never thought of it that way.

4. Yes. He said previously it didn't matter if it were Bill Gates having to pay more taxes.
He doesn't want the wealthy to pay more taxes than the poor. Sort of seems like a flat tax idea.

5. For real. High-octane Calvinism
He said it several times, sometimes in the form, "people who work harder or have gotten better breaks."

But since we know Joe the Plumber works 36 hours a day, nine days a week, I don't see how anyone could work harder.

3. I read that a radio station is "raising money" to give to Joe for his back taxes.
I wonder if Joe will be "comfortable" accepting that handout...

Then pay your state taxes, Joe.
I pay mine, and I don't even live in "real" Virginia.

6. He's a paid, brainwashed tool.
He is what is called an "angry white man". This type of person has been written about at length. It's the "illegals", "minorities", and "liberals", and "government" that's ruining his life. It's not corporations or the wealthy because without them, he wouldn't have a job, so he says.

7. What the hell does this even mean? Would he feel better if it meant higher
taxes for people who have never had breaks? Or does he just want the higher taxes to go to those who don't "work harder"?

I wish the media would notice that this guy's 15 mins of fame are over.

9. Joe the Plumber has been brainwashed like so many others
against Democracy. He is against a government of the people by the people and for the people in favor of government by the wealthy Landowners for the wealthy Landowners.

10. Given that Joe gave himself a $1000+ "tax cut" without telling anyone,
I'm not exactly sure why we're asking his opinion.

15. Maybe I'm dumb too then
If Bill Gates gets a tax cut, and my taxes aren't raised, then how does Gates' tax cut come at my expense?

20. Dave, I meant in the sense that the deficit burden is spread amongst everyone
and also keep in mind the GOP has no problem raising regressive taxes like payroll taxes which saw their biggest increase during Reagan w/o corresponding increases in benefits or McCain's plan to tax health benefits. At times they will push the burden on middle-income people directly.

21. 'cause you'd be driving on dirt roads
A certain amount of national wealth must be dedicated to the health of the nation.

So even if you don't pay for Bill Gates' tax cut in your $$$ you pay in terms of national quality of life.

27. that's a stretch
So any tax cut, because it reduces government revenue, comes at my expense. I don't buy that argument. It's OUR money, not the government's. I'm tired of hearing about how tax cuts will cost the government. It's not their money!

31. Isn't he basically saying that it's patriotic to pay taxes?
The same thing Biden got roundly criticized for?

He 'wouldn't feel right' but its OK for a millionaire to accept a tax cut even if it means higher taxes for the middle class?
