Obama the most libertal member of the Senate?
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 01:49 PM by WatchWhatISay
Over the past few months, I have heard this said by Republicans many times, and have never once heard a Democrat or the media dispute it.

I beleive that the source of this crap is the National Review, a highly partisan, right-wing publication. I'm pretty sure they said the same thing about Kerry in 2004. My question is, is there a left wing organization, or even a truly non-partisan group or publication that keeps track of this, besides the National Journal. Come on, Obama's more liberal than Bernie Sanders, or Barabara Boxer, or Russ Feingold? I think not. If there is such a study, we need to arm the media and Democrats in the media, with some ammunition. I don't know why we just let this stand.

On edit: I first said National Review, but after checking found it is National Journal that did this study. I'm not sure how partisan they are because I'm not that familiar with them. Anybody able to comment on this.

I did see an MSNBC story that, indeed they did call Kerry the most liberal Senator in 2003 (results come out, conveniently, in 2004), and that THEY CHOOSE 99 the senate votes from which to reach their conclusion, so there's a chance to manipulate things right there.

1. Yeah, the National Review magically determines you to be the most liberal Senator
if you run for President(Kerry, Gore, Obama). They're cool like that.

2. What's wrong with being the most liberal senator? Seriously.

That's nothing to apologize for, it's something to be proud of.

The conservatives are the ones who need to hide their heads in shame and apologize.

9. I can see someone being an extreme leftist to the point that they turn off most Americans
Peta for example, and a few others. But no one in the Senate fits that definition.

But no, I don't think there is anything wrong with being a liberal, and proudly describe myself that way. But it is still inaccurate to say Obama, who is a little bit of a centrist in my book, is the most liberal.

3. If he's the most liberal, that's more reason to vote for him
You don't see conservatives disputing the fact that they are conservative, do you?

I downloaded 2007 -- They score Obama at 75%

They score Tom Harkin of Iowa at 95%

McCain gets 10%

Just a quick scan - worth a download if you have time

10. According to the article, "liberal" voting includes supporting port safety and ethics reform.
NJ is fairly nonpartisan, but that article is based on 20th century politics.
