McCain Falsely Suggests He Supports Federal Funding For Embryonic Stem Cell Research»


In an interview with a local CBS affiliate in St. Louis, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) criticized Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) for running ads “that are absolutely false about my positions on the issues.” McCain then made a specific reference to his position on stem cell research:

MCCAIN: The quote, tone of the campaign has been tough. Its been hard. Senator Obama is running four ads right now that are absolutely false about my positions on the issues.

Q: Which ones?

MCCAIN: On immigration, on health care, on stem cell research – and the other one I can’t uhh – they’re absolutely false. He says I do not support funding for stem cell research. I do. I mean, thats flat out wrong.

Of course, McCain did not specify what kind of stem cell research he supports. In fact, according to his campaign website, a McCain-Palin administration would only support funding for adult stem cell research and scientific studies that do “not involve the use of human embryos“:

As president, John McCain will strongly support funding for promising research programs, including amniotic fluid and adult stem cell research and other types of scientific study that do not involve the use of human embryos.

Since McCain began his run for president, he has been forced to do a political dance on the stem cell issue. He praised embryonic stem cell research in April 2007 but last September, while he claimed to support funding the practice, he added that “clear lines should be drawn that reflect a refusal to sacrifice moral values and ethical principles for the sake of scientific progress.”

But his current stance posted on his website makes clear that a McCain-Palin administration would not fund embryonic stem cell research — a position from a self-described “maverick” that happens to mirror the 2008 GOP platform.

who is ardently "pro-life"--hey she was adopted by pro-life parents (who actually walked their talk when it came to adoption), so I can understand why she feels the way she does. But this information might make her change her mind--and her vote. I think I'll tell her about Bob Barr....
