RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — If Michelle Obama is her husband's "rock," his grandmother is a big part of the ground beneath it.

Madelyn Payne Dunham gave young Barack Obama a place to call home while his mother traveled the world. When he needed money for school, she went without new clothes to help pay his tuition.

5. Hopes like that keep people alive.
I pray for her full recovery. But I also know that the incredible expectation and pride that "her little boy" is about to win the most important election in more than 50 years will give her the endurance to see it happen. Come on Grandma! We're all pulling for you.

12. She's already voted.
I saw it in another article.

Still, it will be wonderful for her to see that big blue map on Election Night.

11. Me too, Seeing him take the oath of office
will be one of the best things for her. I am saying quiet little prayers that she will find the strength to keep going.

13. My dear Mrs. Dunham
I have wanted to write to you for a long time to thank you for the wonderful job you did in bringing up your grandson Barack (Barry). What did you do to create such character in him of kindness and caring? He has inspired so many. He is able to reach young and mature voters. He has been called transitional by Colin Powell and he is right. Barach is just what we need at this time to lead us and help us make the changes that we must to get back on the correct path. We've been spinning our wheels for so long. I have to congratulate you for a job well done in the upbringing of the next President of the United States. Thank you, Thank you.

14. she just HAS to be here to see him elected
His many achievements are, in a real way, her achievements too, and the world owes her a debt of gratitude.

15. Whenever I think about this, my eyes well up with tears.
She just has to make it. She just has to.

For as much as fate has smiled upon Barack Obama, he has too experienced sorrow. He has lost so much.

20. She should by all rights be the first to say to him;
"Congratulations, Mr. President-Elect" after McCain's concession speech.
