It is infuriating when people do this.

When I was younger here in Detroit in the early eighties, before I joined the service, I was riding my bike home east on Jefferson Ave. I was going in the right direction, because it's a wide street with plenty of room and it was broad daylight. Anyway, a car with a older white couple passed me by, pulled over to the right side and parked. And just as I was about pass it, the driver opened his door directly in my path. I almost hit that door square on, but quickly avoided that but my foot and pedal hit his door instead.

Now, most people would have gotten mad at that point. I don't know why I didn't, other than to explain that I'm not normally quick to anger. But, away this older white guy gets out of his car, doesn't say a word, rushes over to a newspaper stand, grabs a newspaper and still without a word, gets back into his car to drive away.

Now, during this time I looking at this guy, not one angry word comes out of my mouth. Silly kid that I am, I even ask the guy if his car is OK.

Of course, he said nothing... and as he drove off, probably to Grosse Pointe, or some rather all white suburb at the time, I'm looking at this guy incredulously.

I'm standing there with a broken right pedal and a stinging foot trying to fathom what the fuck just happened. I was still a little in shock, you know... almost seeing my life pass me by.

Then it hit me... That old white guy was SCARED OF ME! ME! Jeezus freaking Christ, I wouldn't hurt a fly and I was the victim here. I even asked the guy if his car was OK. But all the old knew was fear.

What kind of fucked up world is this?

Anyway, as I continued my ride home, I had time to realize that I should have gotten the old fucker's license plate. But also about how white people are pretty scared of blacks in a city that I've NEVER had a crime committed against me EVER.

Until that day, of course... when a frightened, old white guy from the suburbs made me a victim of a hit and run.

I'm so sorry. There's nothing to say except the world is fucked up beyond belief sometimes. :(

For the most part I was even accepted when I visited with friends with openly racist parents. I was much more often (though not the majority of the time by any means) sneered at or made to feel unwelcome by both black kids and their parents.

With time I feel it has balanced out, whites a bit less welcoming/inclusive and blacks significantly more so. Its all very odd to me and to be honest, in general I try to ignore it and for the most part do pretty well. I think the real divide is wealth vs. everyone else. Classism in America care nothing about race. The shrub was Colbert like color blind with Rice and Powell. The race stuff is just a distraction to keep folks from following the money.
