I am glad they are doing this, but why not sooner. I was also glad to see Rachel Maddow cover what the legislature here did. The Democrats knew they had shortened the hours for voting, and they knew they had limited the places to vote. Glad they are speaking out, but why not sooner?
Florida Democrats urge Crist to extend early votingTALLAHASSEE — Nine Florida Democrats asked Gov. Charlie Crist and Secretary of State Kurt Browning on Thursday to extend early voting in the state and take steps to reduce long waits at the polls.
The letter asked for early voting to be extended in every county through Election Day, Nov. 4, and for polls in all counties to be kept open on weekends. In addition, the letter outlines requests to train additional poll workers, provide more voting equipment and enhance technology.
"With a week and a half remaining in early voting, there are steps that the state should take immediately to ensure every Floridian who wants to vote on and before Nov. 4 has that opportunity with the least amount of stress and wait time," the letter reads.
Those who signed the letter were U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and congressmen Alcee L. Hastings, Kendrick B. Meek, Robert Wexler, Ron Klein and Allen Boyd, and congresswomen Corrine Brown, Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Kathy Castor. U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, who is embroiled in an adultery scandal, was the only Democrat in the Florida congressional delegation who did not sign the letter.
I have not heard much from the Florida Democratic legislators on this. I know they are in the minority, but they do have voices. They could have spoken out more loudly on this.
Someone was asking how the voting was going in Polk County. We knew the state early voting, not counting absentees (which have not been tallied yet)...was 2 to 1 Democratic.
Seems that Polk County as of midday yesterday was following the same pattern.
