1. In 1973, Karl Rove was President of the College Republicans - the organization that Ashley Todd belongs to.
2. In 1986, working for Republican Bill Clements in the Governor race against Democrat Mark White, Karl Rove bugged his own candidate's office... then "discovered" the bug on the eve of a big debate late in the election cycle. The news coverage was all about the bug and not the debate and Clements won.
3. In 2000, a week before the first debate between George Bush and Al Gore, a mysterious package containing a videotape of Bush's debate prep sessions arrived at Gore headquarters. RW radio immediately cried that Gore was "cheating". It was no secret that Bush was a poor debater, and Rove was trying to create a storyline to explain why Bush would lose the debate so badly to Mr. Gore. An investigation finally led to a low-level Cheney staffer being fired.
There are many more stories about Rovian campaign tactics over the years... basically, tossing shiny objects in the air for the press and public to gawk over in order to create a distraction to take their opponents off message.
The Palin "email hack" last month was another example.
Ms. Todd has no doubt studied the tactics of the most famous alumnus of the College Republicans organization.... and she made a very poor attempt to pull off a stunt.
The only problem is that she is an inexperienced 20-year-old who didn't think through her plans carefully enough.
But rest assured... there are other young College Republicans that will learn from her mistakes and produce more "convincing" stunts in the future.
These people have no moral base. They are despicable. Do not take them lightly. They may be bumbling fools right now when they are in their 20s. But they'll refine their tactics. The Ashley Todds of today are tomorrow's Karl Roves.
