Early voted in NC Yesterday...GREAT signs here!
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 01:15 PM by adoraz
So I went to vote early in Raleigh, NC yesterday.

There was a really long line, and the big majority of people seemed to be supporting Obama. I had to wait about 20 minutes to get my ballot even though there were a lot of workers and the line moved quickly.

Surprisingly, even though most people seemed to be supporting Obama, there were almost no black people. At least 90% of the people were white, and here in Raleigh we have a large black population.

Oh, and there was one thing that made me pretty nervous. They did not require any identification. All they asked for was my name and address. Could lead to a lot of voter fraud... I thought it was pretty ridiculous that they didn't require ID. Do other states have similar policies?

1. In my area of PA, they look your name up in a book...
...and require a signature, but no ID.

2. they had me do the same thing

but couldn't this still lead to voter fraud? I mean, all you need to know is a person's name and address and you could cast multiple votes. Do you know if they compare the signature to anything?

edit: I'm not really paranoid about this, but I still think it's a little disturbing that they don't require proof.

3. I'm going to have to pay more attention this time - there may be a signature there...
...from the last vote to compare it with. Does seem like they should ask for ID.

5. And there is no history of that happening
You are worrying about a problem that doesn't exist.

9. There have been 12 cases of voter fraud - 12! - since 2000
Compare that to tens of millions of voters disenfranchised because of the false paranoia about voter fruad.

As a note: the point of this topic wasn't to claim my state is committing voter fraud and stir up controversy. It was to share my experience voting, and I added that in the end because I have never lived in a place where they didn't require ID. I just thought it was really strange but now I know the reason why they don't require it.

4. The reason NC does not require ID
is specifically to not disenfranchise those who may not have a drivers license.

It is not a law that you need to have DL and that's a good thing. Many more of the black population than white do not have a DL (I remember a source, but don't have the link handy) and requiring such would do what I just said above.

6. The elderly and disabled
are also less likely have a DL.
