In speech on children with disabilities, Palin cluelessly criticizes research that led to advances

Memo To Palin: Fruit Fly Research Has Led To Advances In Understanding Autism

This morning, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) gave her first policy speech urging the federal government to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), “a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.” In the speech, Palin cited the need to do more for children with disabilities such as autism:

For many parents of children with disabilities, the most valuable thing of all is information. Early identification of a cognitive or other disorder, especially autism, can make a life-changing difference.

Palin claimed that the amount that Congress spends on earmarks “is more than the shortfall to fully fund IDEA.” She then ridiculed some of the projects — such as “fruit fly research” — saying they have little or no value:

Where does a lot of that earmark money end up anyway? <…> You’ve heard about some of these pet projects they really don’t make a whole lot of sense and sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good. Things like fruit fly research in Paris, France. I kid you not.

Watch it:

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/10/24/palin-fruit-flies/">Palin hits fruit fly research but it has helped autism

Palin did not specify what fruit fly research earmark she was referring to (presumably a grant for olive fruit fly research), but she is apparently unaware that scientific research with fruit flies has led to valuable discoveries that have boosted autism research, as a study at the University of North Carolina demonstrated last year:

<…>

The study of fruit flies has also been used for other autism research and “revolutionize(d)” the study of birth defects.

1. WTF??? Fruit flies are probably the most important organism in studying genetics.
God, that lady is sooooo stupid. Drosophila's are all we ever talk about in my Genetics class. They are the easiest organisms to do crosses other than C. elegans but C. elegans aren't as helpful because they only come in hermaphrodite and males.

4. Well, when you don't believe in science, then your whole post is considered gobbly-goop.
I, however, believe in science and respect the importance of fruit flies.

expert in something. Narcissistic much ?

7. The most important

I did studies on fruit flies in Genetics 301 and then guess what I saw in graduate school? More fruit flies.

Palin = Unbelievable idiot

Fucking moron. She has no idea how much of an imbecile she sounds like. Pissing on legitamate scientific studies as regardless by tagging words in there that would belittle them to the minds of her followers such as "fruitfly" and "france".

3. But this is some of that weird hard sciency stuff.
God did it, he can just get in there and undo it, by golly, also fruit flies don't get autism. John McCain and I understand that your hard earned money shouldn't be spent on curing fruit flies, 'cause it takes money away from all you hard-working families that already understand that if you don't want fruit flies, you throw away your fruit before it gets overripe. Oh and also it's all about jobs.

15. "It goes to projects having little or nothing to do with the public good...like fruit fly research"
Edited on Fri Oct-24-08 05:04 PM by ProSense
This is a matter of how we prioritize the money that we spend. We've got a three trillion dollar budget, and Congress spends some 18 billion dollars a year on earmarks for political pet projects. That's more than the shortfall to fully fund the IDEA. And where does a lot of that earmark money end up? It goes to projects having little or nothing to do with the public good -- things like fruit fly research in Paris, France, or a public policy center named for the guy who got the earmark. In our administration, we're going to reform and refocus. We're going to get our federal priorities straight, and fulfill our country's commitment to give every child opportunity and hope in life.

When will the media call out this idiot for this speech?

22. A post from Scienceblogs.com
I am appalled.

This idiot woman, this blind, shortsighted ignoramus, this pretentious clod, mocks basic research and the international research community. You damn well better believe that there is research going on in animal models — what does she expect, that scientists should mutagenize human mothers and chop up baby brains for this work? — and countries like France and Germany and England and Canada and China and India and others are all respected participants in these efforts.

Yes, scientists work on fruit flies. Some of the most powerful tools in genetics and molecular biology are available in fruit flies, and these are animals that are particularly amenable to experimentation. Molecular genetics has revealed that humans share key molecules, the basic developmental toolkit, with all other animals, thanks to our shared evolutionary heritage (something else the wackaloon from Wasilla denies), and that we can use these other organisms to probe the fundamental mechanisms that underlie core processes in the formation of the nervous system — precisely the phenomena Palin claims are so important.

This is where the Republican party has ended up: supporting an ignorant buffoon who believes in the End Times and speaking in tongues while deriding some of the best and most successful strategies for scientific research. In this next election, we've got to choose between the 21st century rationalism and Dark Age inanity. It ought to be an easy choice.
