TPM confirms McCain camp responsible for pushing B-Girl story
Berni_McCoy was right on the money

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/mccain_aide_gave_reporters_inc.php

John McCain's Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established -- and even told reporters outright that the "B" carved into the victim's cheek stood for "Barack," according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain's Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, "You're with the McCain campaign? I'm going to teach you a lesson."

Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the "B" stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a hoax.

The KDKA reporter had called McCain's campaign office for details after seeing the story -- sans details -- teased on Drudge.

The McCain spokesperson's claims -- which came in the midst of extraordinary and heated conversations late yesterday between the McCain campaign, local TV stations, and the Obama camp, as the early version of the story rocketed around the political world -- is significant because it reveals a McCain official pushing a version of the story that was far more explosive than the available or confirmed facts permitted at the time.

The claims to KDKA from the McCain campaign were included in an early story that ran late yesterday on KDKA's Web site. The paragraphs containing these assertions were quickly removed from the story after the Obama campaign privately complained that KDKA was letting the McCain campaign spin a racially-charged version of the story before the facts had been established, according to two sources familiar with the discussions.

a PA audience yesterday that they were definetly going to win Pennsylvania because she has insider information.

We can imagine what would happen if this were true and the corporatemedia ran with it..like they're not going to run with the "Confession".

And they may have embellished and definitely added their own spin to enhance the racial aspects of the story.

But given the tone and actions of this camp, I'm not so sure I'm willing to be quite as generous as you are. I do agree, though, that even though I'm inclined to think that the underlying motivations are uglier, that doesn't negate that they are stupid and desperate as well.

These folks have shown nothing... NOTHING... to indicate that they should be offered the benefit of the doubt on this when they spin it into a little "whoops! We goofed, we're over-tired, desperate, stupid... gosh, shucks..." Nope. Not from me and I usually go overboard on the benefit-of-the-doubt thing to a fault... (haven't had a lot of opportunity for this, lately, though).

I'm bloody angry.

October 6, 2008 - 12:56pm
NEWS: New Jersey
McCain's NJ campaign: 'We're here and plan to stay'
By Max Pizarro, PolitickerNJ.com Reporter

If the McCain campaign’s decision to end operations in Michigan doesn’t exactly produce a rush of new resource opportunities in New Jersey, McCain at least does not intend to fold up his Garden State headquarters, according to spokesman Peter Feldman.

"Obviously as we move closer to Election Day, the campaign is making strategic decisions about limited resources and taking a closer look at the electoral map," said the Woodbridge-based Feldman. "The McCain campaign continues to fight for New Jersey’s 15 electoral votes, which are still up for grabs.

"With resources coming out of Michigan, we expect more attention on the traditional battleground states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, but also other states like Maine and New Jersey," the spokesman added.

Based in NJ 2 weeks ago? And he's not a national staffer? Really? So wouldn't that mean that his pushing the story IS connected to the NATIONAL campaign? Just saying....

91. I've had a suspicion for a while now that somebody was mocking us and rubbing our noses
in it. It started with Bush. You've got to figure there are a lot of smart people among the Corpo/Fascists who could front for them in a slick, smart way--like Reagan, for instance. Good actors with facile tongues. Bush is an insult to the American people. That's how it feels--as if someone designed a president to belittle "we, the people" and damage our notion of ourselves as an efficient, technologically savvy, can-do country whose diverse, large-scale democracy produces great scientists, great inventors, great entrepreneurs, great medical discoveries, an awesome space program that put men on the moon and Hubble in orbit, great engineers, great movies, great literature, great heroes like Martin Luther King, universal education, public libraries in every community, great emergency services, and a great big progressive middle class that wants to give everyone a fair shake.

So they shove Bush, the retard, down our throats--a president who can't put two coherent sentences together without a prompter and who thinks "hunting" for WMDs under the Oval Office rug is funny. A coward who went AWOL from a "champagne" unit of the National Guard, who then turns around, and orders the VOLUNTEERS from our fire departments, and police departments, and various professions--people who have made something of themselves and have helped develop and protect their communities, and who put in extra service in the National Guard--to Iraq, to slaughter a million Iraqis for Exxon Mobil and the Bush Cartel.

A worm. A man who has failed all his life. A man with insufficient brains to have a conscience.

It just got to me that Bush is an insult. I was thinking of Howard Ahmanson, the reclusive multi-billionaire who is the initial funder and major investor in ES&S (spinoff of Diebold), who also gave one million dollars to the extremist 'christian' Chalcedon foundation, which touts the death penalty for homosexuals, sitting back and snickering in his remote bunker, about having foisted the stupidest fucktard on earth upon us "president." A talentless puppet on a string who does his little codpiece dance to the worshipful bows of the Corpo/Fascist 'news' monopolies. Someone who is so obviously not his own man that people shudder to think of his hand on the "red button" and half expect Armageddon to break over our heads at any time.

Snickering at the insult. Watching us squirm. Getting his jollies off as this rotten-souled idiot wanders among portraits of George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson, and FDR, and gets known for farting in the presence of new White House aides to make them uncomfortable and show them who's "in charge." Laughing at us; enjoying our helplessness, our demoralization and our disenfranchisement.

And then McDrone and Ms. To-Nowhere are shoved in our faces, and they seem, if anything, a Vaudeville version of Bushwhackery--the washed up old coot snorting and wheezing about ACORN and God knows what, paired with the Tanya Harding of politics, whom one can easily imagine egging a boyfriend into whacking the legs of a rival skater to win a contest--someone for whom service to her own ambition blots out all decency and common sense. A lunatic.

And the hell of it is that the 'TRADE SECRET' code in Howard Ahmanson's election theft machines, and Diebold's and Sequoia's, CAN, in fact, inflict these people upon us as President and Vice President of the United States. The Corpo/Fascists have that capability now--that EASY capability--with this wholly non-transparent voting system they have managed to install everywhere in the county. They don't have to bother choosing clever candidates, or reasonable, responsible people for the highest offices in our land. They got away with Bush. They can get away with anything.

These people--McCain and Palin--should never have been candidates for these offices. Nor should Bush have been! They don't represent us, and they are not qualified to lead us. Cheney is at least arguably intelligent--he knows what he is doing--even if he has the evilest intentions of anyone who has ever held public office in the U.S. But Bush, McCain, Palin? They are the creations of a sneering mind--a mind that hates the U.S.A. and everything it stands for in the minds of most of its citizens.

I don't know if Howard Ahmanson & brethren are going to foist these two on us, as the final insult. There are some signs and omens that they have a longer term plan, that involves permitting Obama to win, but greatly shaving his mandate, and inflicting him with a "Blue Dog" Congress (like the present one), and, along with the financial 9/11 they just pulled, tie his hands as to any serious reform--thus protecting their election theft machines from the wrath of the American people, and prepping for 2012. It's a guess. I don't really know.

All I know is that they CAN put McCain and Palin in the White House. And that is the most disturbing thing of all. They can, easily.

118. NIcely put
I am hoping that the Dems are silent about the voting machines because they don't want to piss off the owners any more than they have to at this juncture. And I further hope that they have planned, once sworn in, to actually then DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

That TRADE SECRET CODE must be opened up and random chip checks allowed, and if the Bush courts won't allow it, then Obama has to order their compliance in the interests of National Security. Why wouldn't the foundation of democracy, the voting process, NOT be a matter of National Security?. Why should it be privatized at all?, but that's another question.

141. I do understand what you're saying--fear of Diebold & brethren's power.
I watched our good Sec of State here in California get driven from office, on entirely bogus corruption charges, after he sued Diebold and demanded to see their source code, six months before the 2004 election. It was the ugliest thing I ever saw in CA politics, involving Dems, the media, Schwarzenegger (whose phony recall election may have been in jeopardy of exposure).

I understand how dangerous these Corpo/Fascists and Bushwhacks are. And I, too, harbor the hope that Obama--if they can't prevent him from winning, or decide not to (for their own nefarious reasons)--will just do it by fiat--cleanse the entire system. He could simply say, a) paper ballot for every vote; and b) 100% handcount. And that would be it. They can keep the machines for data storage of re-checking the vote. The tyranny is over.

The problem is that the current Democratic Congress could have done that, and didn't.

There are two reasons for their failure, in my view: 1) That only one third of the Senate was up for election in 06, the Senate was still full of dinosaurs, Diane Feinstein being one of them, and she blocked reform that the House wanted to implement, and/or 2) --a darker view, that most of our elected leaders were (s)elected with 'TRADE SECRET' vote counting, and are now beholden to those rightwing Corpos for their power, and are protecting them.

It is the likelihood particularly of the 2nd reason that leads me to believe that the only way we, the people, can achieve election reform is at the state/local level, which actually still holds the power over elections systems, and where ordinary people still have some influence.

It also makes me VERY WORRIED about what kind of reform a Diebold-(s)elected Congress would enact. It was the Anthrax Congress that did this to us in the first place--with most of the Dems voting FOR it. Now, there is hardly a member of Congress who can prove that he or she was actually elected. They are all now beholden to Diebold & brethren for their power. They could use the election reform movement to instigate yet worse measures--for instance, federalizing and centralizing the election system, and requiring electronic voting (it is not now required), but failing to require audit/recount controls. This would be the worst of all possible worlds. We would have no recourse as to our local county registrars or state officials. Removing them wouldn't change things. I seriously fear this. And what if Obama sides with the Corpos and their Dem shills in Congress? They will sell it as "reform," and as "standardization," as they did HAVA, which fast-tracked e-voting by Bushite corpos with 'TRADE SECRET'code and no control--but it was not required; instead, it was funded with $3.9 billion, and, what with Corpos' lavish lobbying of election officials, corruption won. That was the Anthrax Congress' response to the Supreme Court crowning Bush--blaming it on the Florida hanging chads, and passing a law that made things much worse. (At least you could SEE hanging chads!) With a presidential order on National Security grounds--but ordering the wrong thing (mandated, privatized e-voting, with insufficient controls) --our democracy--or any hope to restore it in the near future--would be over in seconds. Congress might take longer, but the impact would be the same. Local control of election systems, gone--and, with it, the hope that a citizen movement could be mobilized to reform it at the local level.

The next step would be the Boston Tea Party. We would have no other recourse. And how many times do we have to be betrayed by our own party leaders before we realize that even the best of them, with few exceptions, are not on the side of the people, at all, or not most of the time?

The faction of the Democratic Party that Obama had to compromise with, to get into a position to be Diebolded into office, are the ones who helped the Bushwhacks Tom Delay and Bob Ney (now in jail) to privatize our voting system and remove all transparency. The pro-war, pro-Corpo Dems. He may not be able to buck them on this.

130. I hope that Drudge takes a major hit from this.
Remember how the Right jumped on the ten-thousand-times-more-legitimate journalist Dan Rather in 2004 for the papers from the National Guard story, after the papers turned out to be fake? (I mean, even then what the papers actually said -that Bush was AWOL a whole lot from a soft Stateside gig he got, thanks to his family's influence, to avoid Vietnam- were still probably at least partly true, right?)

Well, this is one hundred percent false. This is an outright lie, intended to spur racial resentment against the Obama campaign. And - unlike the faked papers in 2004 - this can be traced back to a campaign in some way.

So shamelessly promoting, trumpeting, blaring, shouting from the rooftops the most despicable of lies, shouldn't that put an indelible mark on Drudge's reputation, such as it is to begin with? I mean, are there partly reasonable people on the other side that are going to turn their backs on this guy for this?

Unfortunately, somehow, I really doubt it.

127. K&R and let's ask that Fox VP to comment every day about the demise of the McHate campaign.
What does the VP think Republicans should do now that the McHate campaign is over as he said it would be when this story turned out to be a hoax.

How sad is that VP that his candidate Republican McHate would be "forever linked to race baiting" ?

135. Seems like the media is trying to sweep this under the rug.

I want to know if any charges are going to be filed against McSame for being an accomplish in this crime? The co-conspirator of a crime is just as guilty of the crime if they assisted in the crime. That can be anything from helping plan this, to being a lookout man.

But then again there is Brittany, and Palin's wardrobe to talk about. conspiracy.

"B" Hoax Photographer Speaks: "I Only Gave Copies of the Photos to Police...and College Republicans"
October 25, 2008, 2:36PM

The photographer who took the photos of Ashley Todd's self-inflicted injuries, only gave copies of the digital photos to the Pittsburgh police, and to her employers, the College Republicans.

This means there is no way the College Republicans and the McCain campaign was not involved in pushing this story, because Matt Drudge was up with the photo before the Pittsburgh Press even had access to them.

Here's the quote from today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (emphasis mine):

Mr. (Dan) Garcia took the widely published picture of Ms. Todd with her injuries. He said he took several photographs with a digital camera to document what had happened. He said he only gave copies of the photos to police and Ms. Todd's employer, the College Republicans. One photo appeared on The Drudge Report on Thursday, setting off a storm of media attention.

Here, then, is the direct link between the College Republicans working for the McCain campaign and the story that the McCain campaign was pushing through it's regional communications director, Peter Feldman, to the Pittsburgh media outlets.

137. That's right, the first thing the McSame camp did was go to the media and not the police
Right there tells me they were interested in getting out the story instead of reporting this to the police to chase down the alleged attacker.

All I can say is good thing this opened up to show the truth so the media would back off, but over on FReeper land they were all loading up there rifles, and buying more ammo.
