Poll question: Why do scientists use fruit flies to study human genetics?

A. They shouldn't be! Fruit flies aren't in the Bible!

B. They need to stop doing that because it's a waste of money

C. Only bad scientists use fruit flies to study humans

D. The lifespan of a fruit fly is about 10-18 days, allowing scientists to study generations of them in a short period of time, which would be impossible to determine with most mammals

This is how they discovered that disorders like Hemophilia and Color Blindness are sex-linked.

9. God, I hate fruit flies
I REALLY hate the buggers. Then again, I spent several weeks of my life breeding them for biology labs. However, I have a reason to despise them. I'm a chemist, not a biologist; however, I learned a lot about genetics through doing that.

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, has probably never seen a fruit fly, much less understands why we study them.

That same class, I had to do genetics using corn and evolution using beans. (Hey, I'm an Iowan. At least it is University of Iowa, and not Iowa State...)
