FLorida: Lakeland Ledger endorses Obama. Most surprising.
Looks like they just posted it, and the text is a little messed up.

But the message is clear.

President Barack Obama

Unfortunately, change has already come to the presidential campaign of McCain. He initially opposed Bush's tax cuts for high-income Americans because the legislation didn't include matching cuts in spending. However, even with the national debt moving into 14 figures,
maintaining those tax cuts has become a centerpiece of the McCain campaign.
Similarly, he has abandoned his opposition to expansion of offshore drilling, and apparently has softened his position on drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by selecting a vice presidential nominee who leads the GOP cheer "drill, baby, drill!"

McCain touts his military experience - indeed, all Americans are indebted to him for his service and sacrifice - but, on key issues during this campaign, he hasn't provided the discipline needed to avoid reliance on popular-but-misguided policies. Perhaps that is one reason that, according to trustworthy polls, Americans are preparing to change direction by electing a three-year senator.LEADERSHIP EXAMPLEWhat Americans see about Obama daily is the disciplined success of his campaign, potentially the most effective in presidential history, and the sureness of its leader, who was unflappable in the televised presidential debates. It is only a small step for voters to conclude: "Our country should run so well. Our president should lead so reliably."

It is such realizations that make the choice of Obama for president clear.

...."Obama has displayed presidential temperament under the intense fire of a tough campaign. It's a leap of faith to support a candidate with so little political experience. But the leadership skills Obama has demonstrated, his clear-and-steadfast approach and his ideas for improving on our nation's reckless entry into the 21st century - "The last eight years haven't worked very well, have they?" - pose the lesser risk and offer the greatest potential for the nation. His commitment to find common ground on issues will bode him well, and we encourage him to stick by it for the good of the nation.

The Ledger recommends Barack Obama and Joe Biden for president and vice president.

Good for them.

The St Pete Times endorsed Obama also as have most major Florida papers excerpt for the Tampa Tribune.

3. No, but people pay attention to endorsements like this.
From a paper that has been steadfastly with the Bush agenda, this is really a surprise.

2. His incredible all record breaking campaign is a true testament
of his leadership.

When his critics say that he hasn't ran anything, they are simply ridiculous, and jealous!

13. This is the largest paper in the center of the I-4 Corridor
Tampa to the west, Orlando to the east, and more rural Polk County in the midddle with Lakeland as the largest city.

The Ledger's circulation, last I heard, was about 75,000.

Obama said he would turn the I-4 Corridor blue. Maybe he will.

Florida's I-4 Corridor across the center of the state...called a "microcosm"

"I-4 is a little bit of South Florida, a little bit of North Florida, a little bit of Yankee transplants, and a little bit of old South rednecks," said Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker. ``It may be the best microcosm of Florida."

The fellow who said that failed to mention the fundamentalist culture across the corridor. Southern Baptist churches dominate as well as Assembly of God and megachurches. They will vote Republican, I can guarantee. Not all, but most. It is ingrained into their minds.

That's why this is so significant an endorsement.

14. Nice message from the Lakeland Ledger
on how well run Obama's campaign is and our country should run so well.

That's the money quote right there. More people should be able to comprehend that.

Thanks, mad. :hi:

15. Holy smokes. I live in Lakeland.
This is most surprising.

Lakeland isn't as full of fundies as many posters on here make it out to be. There's a lot of moderates and retired military here that lean Republican, and retirees from all over the country. Yes we have our share of fundies, and the racism down here is bad, but it's really not that much worse than when I was living in Wisconsin. Every state has their racists.

There's a lot of old Southern Democrats down here that are excited for Obama.

16. Yes, a lot of us around.
But since 2000 we have seen the religious right in a new light, and have seen their numbers.

People come here to do a home repair or tree work....they want to pray for or with us. They are offended if we don't wish to do so.

Some guys show up to cut some tree branches with a huge confederate flag on the truck. I don't remember seeing that much here before so openly.

The pest control guy told me Obama was a muslim. I set him straight. He said his church was sending out Amendment 2 stuff about gays. I said we would vote against that amendment because it was just hate filled.

He said don't you want to stop them from marrying? I said why? I asked when it became the business of his church or of him?

He came back in to me later and said did I mean that the church group was hurting another group of people? I said yes.

I could go on, just getting started. Bush enabled these religious people in our area to be more obnoxious.
