Poll question: Non-Obama voters, are they racist?
I'd like DU's opinion on this matter.

2. Exactly. There really should be more options for this poll.
No doubt there are people who aren't voting for Obama because they're racist, but it's unfair to say that that's the case with all of them. Their reasons for opposing him are probably still pretty dumb, but they're not all racists.

3. Some but by no means all
Stupid and/or evil I'll buy but not so much to divide up which versions of stupid and/or evil they are.

5. Not homogenous.
Look how many people voted for Bush vs Gore, and the vs Kerry. It's woefully wrong to characterize all voters not voting for Barack as racist.

9. And the more this is touted the more it turns people off
to voting for Obama. I have seen some die hard Dems get pissed at being told they were racist when they disagreed with Obama's policies and pissed enough they will either stay home or vote for McSame or they switched to another party.

7. Depends on the reason.
If it's that they're a big Iraq War fanboy, and absolutely love economic crashes, and fall for offensive blue-collar stereotypes at the drop of a hat, or truly believe that God loves rich people more, or really loathe women, then, OK, repugnant in other ways, but not necessarily racist.

If it's that "there's just something about him I don't trust, I can't put my finger on it" then yeah, BIG FUCKING RACIST.

8. There are two groups of McCain voters: The Stupid and The Racist.
Sometimes they overlap but not all of The Stupid are racist. I do think all the racists are stupid, however.

13. Non-Obama voters may or may not be racists.
Just because a person doesn't want to vote for Obama does not make them a racist.

14. I think there's a broad mix
* uninformed
* blissfully ignorant "dead dog Repubs" who would vote for that dead dog before a got-damned libruhl
* people who buy into the fear campaign but who are not specifically racist
* really rich people who see anyone earning a low wage as a lazy loser
* lower middle class people who want to be like the really rich who see anyone earning a low wage as a lazy loser so will vote just like them.
* and, of course, the racists

17. i voted not sure
the reason being that a lot of area is left other than race
there are policy differences and party differences
someone who votes nader or mckinney(not sure if i got this name right)would be hard to make a racism arguement against
some will vote by color
i myself feel we have trancended color this time because the gop has fielded such a pair of losers that color wouldnt be enough to make a difference with the public
we have the best candidates
thats why we will win

18. Though I'm sure it's not all, it's still...
a very LARGE portion. I've been making calls, out canvassing, etc. and it's borderline embarrassing how so many McCain supporters have no reasons that they are actually voting for the man. They say they support McCain and my immediate response is "Do you mind if I ask why?". It catches them off guard because they assume I'll just walk away after hearing that they're for McCain. They grumble and mumble and frantically search for any excuse to find for voting McCain instead of just saying the truth: that's it's because Obama is a black guy. They usually can't come up with anything and get very angry and defensive at my harmless question. It's quite a sight.

20. Some definitely are.
But I feel that most McCain supporters can be lumped into five categories.

1. Racists

2. Fundies/Evangelicals

3. The Ultra-wealthy

4. Life-long repukes who will, under no circumstances, break with their party.

5. The Paranoid/Gullible (ie. The Stupid) - the folks who believe Obama is a Muslim terrorist and other hate mongering BS.

22. At this point, the only McCain voters I believe are NOT racist are
1. The wealthy, who want to keep their tax breaks
2. The super-hawkish types who want "victory" in Iraq and support the Bush Doctrine
3. Single issue evangelical voters (abortion, same sex legal unions)

Anyone who calls Obama a Socialist/Communist, a Muslim, not a US Citizen, or in general scary/mysterious is letting Obama's race dominate their judgments.

Anyone who can't get past the Rev. Wright incident is against Obama because of his race.

Any non-Republican who at this late stage of the election, says that they can't vote for Obama because he doesn't have enough experience, is against him because of his race.

This election is unique in that we have exceptionally poor candidate (McCain/Palin), and a very mature, impressive one (Obama). Anyone with half a brain realizes these are trying times and that RIGHT NOW, no matter what your party, you might want to have a sharp and measured thinker in the White House.

This is where the Obama surge is coming from.

Of course not. Obviously some of them are, and viciously so. But you can't paint a whole, huge group of people with one broad brush.

26. I say "Other". If they are Dems & not voting Obama, then yes, they are racist.
The Repubs are a mixed bag. There are Black Republicans who will not vote for Obama. This was seen at their rallies. They are not racist. The Repubs are divided into two main groups the fundies or base which is made up of racists and those who are ideologically against Democrats.

There are Repubs, majority of the time sincerely have an ideological issue more than anything. They are ideologically against anything Democratic and will fight and tooth and nail and will go as far as seeing those who are Liberals or Dems as Anti-American. The fundies as I mentioned are mainly racist and racist in a variety of ways, sometimes it's not because Obama is Black it's because he's "Muslim" or because he's not born here and he has an Arab or Muslim name, as they've stated.

So there are dileneations, it's not Black or White, excuse the pun.
