Jesse Jackson Jr. hopes to replace Obama in Senate
Jesse Jackson Jr. hopes to replace Obama in Senate
By Alexander Bolton
Posted: 10/26/08 01:52 PM

Illinois political insiders say Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who defended Barack Obama after his father famously threatened to castrate him, is the favorite to replace the Democratic nominee in the Senate.
Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) scolded his father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, publicly after his comments were caught unexpectedly on tape before an interview with Fox News this summer.

But Jackson Jr.’s path is by no means assured. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) also wants to replace Sen. Obama (Ill.) in the upper chamber if he is elected president.

This gives Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who must choose between an African-American political scion and a close ally of the labor movement, a difficult decision.

Jackson has made plain that he would like to succeed Obama in the Senate.

“If Sen. Obama wins -- and I’m optimistic that he will, I indeed would be honored and humbled to succeed him in the U.S. Senate,” said Jackson in a statement. “But, in the end, the decision rests with Gov. Blagojevich and I’m confident that he’ll make an appointment in the best interest of the state as well as the nation.”

1. Jan Schakowsky. I hadn't even thought of her. She'd be a good choice, too.

29. Biden wants his son to replace him, and has a chioce between 2 governors to replace him
There was an article somewhere, the politico I think, like a month ago about this.

Basically Joe Biden really wants his son (I think the son who's serving overseas now, maybe Beau Biden, but I could be wrong) to take his seat.

Delawares incumbent governor is term limited, and the voters will choose a new one this November. That means that if one of them won't replace Biden with who he wants that he can wait it out for the next governor (almost certain to be a democrat) to replace him, or resign from his senate seat early so the current governor can replace him now.

9. IMO it would be ELECTRIC if JJJ enters the Senate and pushes mandatory national voting
rights standards. "Voter ID", limits on early voting, "felon disfranchisement", unauditable machines, maximum mismatch discriminatory purges, politically-biased distribution of voting equipment, and all the rest could be sent where poll taxes and literacy tests went.

See http://www.house.gov/jackson/test/VotingRightsFAQ.htm .

And I'd like to see President Obama put voting experts Spencer Overton and Chris Edley high on his list of appointments to start the process of having commonsense mandatory national rules for elections for President and Congress.

14. I have a hard time believing Obama is going to let the current
election shenanigans to continue if he becomes President. The Rethugs wanted to play illegal and dirty and it'll cost them when it's taken away.

21. IMO one surefire way of getting commonsense election fairness is an ordinary bill
with carrots and sticks. Unless a state wipes out its existing laws governing Presidential and congressional elections and enacts the Federal model, it should get NO Federal money whatsoever. And the law should empower disfranchised voters and insider whistleblowers to get cash settlements from any states that do not fully comply.

A Consititutional Amendment to overturn Bush v. Gore and guarantee citizen voting rights forever would be a longer process but could go ahead simultaneously.

11. The safe appointment would be Lisa Madigan
It takes out one major opponent from the 2010 primary for governor and she's a proven winner on the statewide ballot.

He isn't as polarizing, for starters.

16. Lt, Gov. Pat Quinn is also positioning himself for the seat.
Blago might just do it, too. Quinn hasn't been a big supporter and "Gov. Elvis" might be tired of him breathing down his neck.

Quinn's a fairly honest guy for an Illinois politician but he's kind of a peculiar sort.

18. JJ Jr. would make a fine successor to Obama.
Remember, when Obama resigns the Senate to become POTUS, there will be zero African-American Senators.

Jackson's been a Representative for a while. He's certainly qualified.

24. Rahm wants to be Speaker of the House
Which I'd say he has a fairly good shot at getting it in a decade or so given that he's much younger than those in front of him in the line.

I think he IS what the Senate needs as Barack's replacement. He has shown the same kind of fire that Barack has shown us. He would make an excellent Senator.

27. Obama's replacement needs to be someone who can defend the seat statewide in 2010.
If the state GOP gets their act together long enough to select a legitimately viable candidate, they would be eminently capable of defeating Jesse, Jr. in a statewide contest.

31. I agree, we need someone who can win a landslide election and scare away strong challengers
I don't know anything about Jesse Jackson Jr., but just his name worries me that he could become polarizing, or that his father's polarization could drag have a negative coattail effect on him.
