There is a new thing happening in America, something I have not before seen in
my 64 years. There is some kind of chemistry going on right now; seemingly most of the people with IQ's above 80 and some vestiges of a conscience are rallying to the side of decency. Sorta like the body politic is activating its immune system to rid itself of a disease of the soul, or maybe like an exorcism. All of the little demons that have possessed us since Reagan accomplished his unholy enchantment of the American people are being dislodged from their little crannies in the edifices of power--snapping desperately, viciously at us, whom they see as their persecutors, as they retreat.

Not just the Republican Party, but the dark forces of ignorance, hatred and fear which have animated it, are being routed. Jefferson's "reign of witches" (I do wish he had used another word there) is drawing to its close. Come, my dear friends, we have only about nine steps to go.

1. I hope that you are right.
But what does that say about the 44% or so of Americans who support McCain/Palin. Some of them have signs in their yards. Do they not see, don't they care, or do they agree with what the republicans have been saying?

6. I would once have said there are two kinds of McNastyites--the evil and the deluded.
I think by now most of the evil ones have fled, not willing to consign their fortunes to an obviously sinking ship. That leaves the benighted ones, the twisted little souls with their anger, fear and bigotry. I hope we treat them gently. They didn't ask to be made into the little monsters that they are. Perhaps we can help them grow into decent human beings with lives worth caring about.

3. You know, Jackpine, I'm also 64, and I've been thinking along those same lines.
I have started to think that there's even something GOOD about having some of the uglier versions of racism/bigotry coming out into the open and getting expressed. Almost as if the wound has to expel the infection, and getting it out into the air and light will actually help in the healing. If the people repudiate this in the election, the country's immune system will be a lot stronger.

22. IMHO that's why the word "transformative" seems to pop up a lot

There is a lot more going on here than just a presidential election.

I see it too and it's beautiful to behold!

People are FED UP with the lies, the scams,
the hate and the divisive tactics.
They are backfiring big time.

8. it seems to me like a cleansing on a mass scale
I'm so glad to be living through this now, after enduring the past eight years. I won't say it makes the Bush presidency worth it, but maybe the rejection of that brand of Republicanism will be so definitive that it will never be attempted again.

Like all transitions, it won't always be easy. But thank God we're finally done with our hideous adolescence. Almost, anyway.

11. You're not alone. A lot of influential voices are saying the same thing.
This is the paradigm shift that was crushed in its infancy when they shot JFK. But the same spirit rises again, and this time it will win.

Refuse to listen to the fear&war-mongers. Cooperation is the name of the new game on earth.

I now look back at the Reagan years and just cringe. I'll never understand why people thought he was so great. History will show how he undermined just about every good aspect of our society.

18. Something like it in 64-70, but this is bigger
But your post made me think of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g9PiEgYYUU&feature=related

There's something happening here,
What it is ain't exactly clear.
There's a man with a gun over there,
Telling me I've got to beware.

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound?
Everybody look what's going down.

There's battle lines being drawn,
And nobody's right if everybody's wrong.
Young people speaking there minds,
And getting so much resistance from behind.

It's time we stop, hey what's that sound,
Everybody look what's going down.

What a field day for the heat,
A thousand people in the street.
Singing songs and a carrying signs,
Mostly saying hooray for our side.

It's time we stop, hey what's that sound,
Everybody look what's going down.

Paranoia strikes deep,
Into your life it will creep.
It starts when you're always afraid,
Step out of line, the men come and take you away.

We better stop, hey what's that sound,
Everybody look what's going down.(repeat until fade)

21. I know exactly what you mean, JR.
I'm 53, and I also have never seen anything like this before. I've never FELT anything like this before.

We've been fed poison for a long time now, and I think we as a body have hit the point where we cannot ingest any more.

I think the "reign of witches" IS drawing to a close, and I will happily celebrate its demise.

23. You might be on to something
I've allowed myself the same thought. You have about ten years on me but I can recall in great detail all the hate and venom spewed by the Republican Party since 1968 against fellow Americans. From "America Love or Leave it" to the vile comments we've heard from McCain/Palin supporters, there is a long history of hate and utter hypocrisy coming from the "conservatives". Just a few minutes ago I heard Sarah Palin talk about how Barack Obama's government will be coming into our homes to make decisions for us. Follow how it is she who wants the government in charge of our most personal decisions.

The tremendous outpouring of support we see around Obama might just be enough to relegate the Republican hate machine to the sub-basement of American politics. He needs a resounding victory, one large enough to shut up the merchants of hate and division. There can be no greater reward.

I have felt despair more than a few time these last eight long years. But I feel what you're feeling, Jackpine. It feels like hope to me. Or a high colonic, sometimes I can't tell. Either way, I like it.

29. its what he represents to the American Collective Unconscious
I'm speaking symbolically here...Obama is fulfilling the mythical roll that Kennedy started. With JFK we had the death of the king, we had camelot, and its decay, and our country has been in the Wasteland since. Now we have the return of the king. Or at least the arrival of some successor, a Parcival, that will bring us back the grail, and save our souls from the doom of a dream lost.

At least that's what I think. Everybody (what has a soul (wink)) feels that this is "right." He is the man for his time. He will lead us on to greatness. He will bring the hope of the American Dream back to attainability for us. I think its
got to do with the character of Obama, and what he represents to the American Collective Unconscious. I'm speaking symbolically here...Obama is fulfilling the mythical roll that Kennedy started. With JFK we had the death of the king, we had camelot, and its decay, and our country has been in the Wasteland since. Now we have the return of the king.
