John McCain sent my grandmother $1
He sent out a letter with a dollar bill enclosed to ask for donations. I'm assuming they only sent those to people who they think would donation a large sum, or it would be a waste of $1.

my grandma is a Republican, but she doesn't like John McCain. So there's at least one wasted dollar. I convinced her to give me the letter and the envelope. I'm going to send it back and tell him I gave the $1 to Obama. I hope he really wastes a lot of money doing this dumb shit.

2. I hope he sent a dollar to the Russian ambassador he sent the previous fundraising letter to...
Then maybe McCain can go to jail for attempting to bribe a representative of a foreign power.

10. If it was actual cash and not a check- it's illegal to send money via US mail. I also think it
could be considered bribery? - but not sure on that account.

22. It's not illegal to send cash by mail - that's a myth.

It's usually not a very good idea, though.

Anyone here a lawyer or law expert can clear this up? I'd be more than happy to hold on to that letter and turn it in to the proper officials.

18. It is illegal for sure?
I'm trying to do some research on the subject. I'm going to find out who to contact, and send them a copy of it. I wonder if the media would be interested in it as well. If I have something to go on I'll do everything I can to make sure as many people know about it as possible.

Why else would he send a dollar to someone who already has more than what they need if this wasn't his intention?

38. Legally $1 makes it cash.
I know a $1 amount is used to avoid problems that can arise in certain transfers if no money is provided as part of the compensation.
I very much doubt any voter bribery law would be written to exclude amounts under a particular threshold.

20. I really like this idea!
I live by the Dorothy Day Center for the Homeless and I've been meaning to donate there anyway. There's nothing more depressing than going by 200+ poor people standing in line for a meal and warm place to sleep.

And I can still make a personal donation to Barack Obama and tell John McCain that his letter is what inspired me!

23. it depends on the state - so check the law of your state
"State law governs the conduct of state elections, unless an overriding federal interest justifies the exercise of preemptive congressional power. The state of Ohio also has codified penalties for illegal inducements to vote. Ohio Revised Code §3599.01 states that no person shall "give, lend, offer, procure or promise to give, lend offer, or procure any money, office, position, place or employment, influence or any other valuable consideration to or for a delegate, elector, or other person." Likewise, it is forbidden for a person to "advance, pay, or cause to be paid or procure or offer to procure money or other valuable thing to or for the use of another, with the intent that it or part of thereof shall be used to induce such person to vote or to refrain from voting." These code sections provide state-enforced penalties against illegal inducement to vote and are valid in all elections. Anyone found guilty of Ohio Revised Code§ 3599.01 is guilty of bribery, a felony of the fourth degree and any candidate elected must forfeit the office which he was elected.

27. I'm desperately trying to look it up but all I find is information on local candidates
We were forced to give up our internet connection at home, or stop eating. So, I'm just going to call a local election official in the morning. I got several phone numbers of people who will hopefully have information on presidental candidate conduct in Minnesota. Thanks for the advice.

Many of them might feel obligated to donate - if they are republican! It's a mind game... seniors are more trusting!

26. or worse yet, they'll vote for him instead of donating
some might not have the means to donate, but they'll feel indebted to him in a way because they got money from him and thus need to do SOMETHING. for undecided or indecisive seniors, this might be enough. remember when granny used to give you a quarter for doing something around her house as if it was a substantial gift? $1 is certainly enough fodder here. so even if it switches over 1 in 20 or 1 in 50 seniors, in a state like FL, that could be decisive.

35. illegal?
Regarding the posts that ask if it's illegal, when I watched the Michael Moore Film that was available free online a bit ago it talked about the Republicans trying to get him in trouble legally for trying to buy peoples votes, because he was giving out bags of clean underwear at his rally's to get them to vote - so it sounds like it can be illegal - at least some places.

I'm sure the campaign investigated the legality of this before they proceeded, but it sure seems pretty desperate and underhanded to me.
