Are People Going to Wait in Line for 5 Hours to Vote for McCain?
Ed Schultz made this point in last night's townhall in Asheville, to be broadcast today. I think he is right. I think a lot of people will see the lines, and won't feel the motivation, the sense of urgency to cast their vote for such a pathetic candidate.

Obama has the motivation, by far. I can understand wanting to be part of history, making the time sacrifice. But, will they be motivated to sacrifice for the case of being against history?

the far-right neocons are fervent, rabid. They will do everything they can to keep Obama out of the White House. Don't "misunderestimate" them.

20. True
but I think they are a minority. It takes a certain drive and conviction for people to be willing to stand in lines for hours. People are suffering and they want a new direction and that's why they a willing to do this.

3. No. Obama's supporters are vibrant, enthused, and positively giddy
to get him into office. They're the ones crazy enough to wait in the rain a few hours to cast ballots, because they like their candidate and want him to be President.

a caller said to get out and vote to make sure we don't end up with that left wing radical. Don't underestimate the rabid right.

7. Yes, but...
remember that in 2004, it was only the URBAN areas that had the enormous lines due to an insufficient number of machines. The rural areas had plenty of machines available so the Bushites didn't have to stand in long lines. I'm expecting a repeat of this sort of thing this time around.

9. No, but
they might to vote against Obama. Fear and hate can be motivational also. I wouldn't underestimate those forces.

However the more people that believe what Ed is saying to be true, the better. Maybe it will provide incentive to the Republicans to clean up long line voter suppression.

11. Who knows. Read a right wing blog lately?
There's no understanding the degree of hatred and ignorance that fuels these people. And remember they're being fed a whole lot of crap from Rush, O"Reilly and others. They have the media stoking their hatred.
BUT. They haven't gone through the pain of the last 8 years and man, the impetus gained by that would keep me in line for many an hour. Ain't no line too damn long:

14. I think long lines will be a detriment to both sides
I'm sure there are lots of people who are luke-warm at best to Obama but see him as the better candidate. However, they may not be committed enough to bother spending several hours in line to vote.

16. Some will, but it is common sense to believe that many will not be motivated to wait hours in line.
If we all vote and work to get out the vote, then it does not matter if some Republicans refuse to wait in long lines to vote. People are inspired by Obama and not by McCain, so it is easy to believe that those who intend to vote for McCain would not be willing to wait hours in live to vote for a candidate that is widely expected to lose.

17. My guess is no.
On the other hand, the Obama supporters I know have already voted for Obama. And they would crawn on hands and knees through a mile of broken glass to do it again.

18. McCain's supporters are negative voters, where as Obama's are positive voters.
Edited on Thu Oct-30-08 09:13 AM by olegramps
McCain has run a negative campaign that has played on the racists' fears, and out right lies. He has not offered the nation any hope for constructive change.

Therefore, when it comes to waiting in line for five hours to vote, my bet would be with the Obama supporters who are driven by a positive image rather than negativism. I actually wonder if the Republicans will even show up to vote as they see their candidates self destruct. Their party is in disarray and splitting into two camps, those who blame Palin for losing the election and some really delusional people that think Palin is their dream candidate and the future of the party. She could bring about their party's complete collapse since she has awaken a determined opposition that is intent on her complete destruction while managing to alienate half of the Republican camp.

21. Will they HAVE to? Election equipment availability and waiting times to vote are distributed
distributed in highly unequal ways. For waiting-time-to-vote comparisons by race, based on a 2006 survey by the Federal Election Assistance Commission, see Question 10 and Table 10, pages 80 and 56, of http://web.mit.edu/cstewart/www/papers/performance.pdf .
