Families often do not know other family members' "legal status"..case in point
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 10:19 PM by SoCalDem
My new daughter in law told us that when her maternal great-grandfather died two years ago, she found out that he was not who he had claimed to be his whole life..

He had claimed to be Eduardo..born on Dec 14, 1914...but in fact he was Juan..born on Dec 22 1915.
Eduardo had come to the US in 1928 and had become a citizen. On a visit back to Mexico, in 1935, he was killed in a car accident. Juan used his "papers" to come to the US, and "became" Eduardo... He fought in the Pacific in WWII...was wounded at Guadalcanal..Until he died, and they looked through all his old papers & letters, no one in his family knew that he lived most of his 90+ years as his dead brother..

1. My niece was born in the US, grew up in Nigera but held on to her US citizenship

She returned to the States to start college, and an old boyfriend of hers came from Nigeria a year later. He overstayed his visa, and I found him to be oddly blase about his immigration status. Well, it turned out that he had every right to be blase: he and my niece married before she left Nigeria. As the lawfully wedded spouse of a lawful U.S. citizen, there were no grounds on which he could be prevented from entering or staying in the country.
