I'm tired and I need encouragement I'm fighting
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 01:02 AM by Jake3463
I know I said I won't be back on till November 5th but something about GOTV brings out the worst in people including myself. Probably the lack of sleep fueled by the Pizza, cofee, cigarettes, and the late night 2 beers you get to have as you make canvass packets for the next day. You get two hours sleep and you try not to strangle people for doing stupid things. You get people that show up during the day that are crazy and you do your best to resolve the problems the same while screaming Fired up Ready to go to the rank and file volunteers and posing for pictures and trying to force a smile to the people giving up their hard time because they like the way you do the cheer.

I'm fighting....two years ago on a hot summers day in July my ex-fiance passed out on a street in South Street in Philadelphia from heat stroke and ran out the back door of a hospital when she came to, because she was laid off and didn't have health insurance. She didn't want the 5000 bill for the ambulance plus anything else for her treatment in the hospital to rehydrate herself. She was laid off two months before and was making do with a $12 an hour job with no benefits till she could get by. I spent 15 hours rehydrating her with pediolite and gatorade. I'm an accountant not a nurse or Dr. I should not be a loved one's primary health care. Despite the badness of our break-up no person or couple should go through that. THAT IS WHY I SUPPORT BARACK OBAMA.

I'm fighting DU...I'm fighting for the family who wants to send their kid to college, get their kid out of Iraq to generally have a shot at going as far as their old man got to quote a bad song about my hometown Allentown.

I've been fighting since February. I just need to push it over the finish line.

Keep that in mind with your struggles and there are a great deal of thankful people out there. Hang in there and keep on fighting the good fight for the country.

4. Jake, do you know that the experts are now predicting that this could be a record-setting election?
Because of the efforts of people like you.

Gallup admitted today that their polls have been off because they never estimated that THIS many people would vote early. They never estimated that THIS many first-time voters would vote.

The trends are being set in NC, NM, NV, GA and CO.

And I know PA is going to knock people's socks off.

You are doing an amazing job.

When we win PA and the election, we will owe a part of it to you.

5. I volunteered for the first time ever tonight in Arizona. I felt HUMBLED by seeing the
work and dedication that goes into what you're doing EVERY DAY. I don't know if that helps at all, but I've had my eyes opened today to how hard you all work (not that I ever DOUBTED that... but it is something to see it first hand!). I appreciate EVERYONE that puts in the hours that people like you do, and I am amazed and humbled. I am going to get off my ass and help more where I can. Thank you. Thank you so much. :)

3 more days. Soon it will be over.

When my child was about 1 yr old, had breathing problems, like croup. I was unemployed, uninsured, could not afford an ER bill so took jr out into the night air (am a nurse and knew this was a treatment). Hoping that this would calm down the hacking and wheezing. It was frightening. If the breathing had gotten worse, I'd still be paying off the ER bill, but it got better. Jr breathed better, and local pediatrician scolded me up 1 side and down the next day saying the bill would've been taken care of, not worth risking someone's life over.

I am fighting so people do not have to make those choices. Yes, I am angry and bitter and angry.

I have not been able to do as much as I could have, but have donated and done what I could. Thank you for doing so much.

3 more days.

Its disgusting but the sad thing is you would have been paying the bill. My ex made a choice between her ability to dig herself out of a financial hole or medical hole. Rolled the dice and it came up ok...people should not have to roll the dice.

16. That was a moment of developing a really deep anger at the system.
People should not have to roll the dice. I do not think things will change or improve as fast as I want them to, but it is time to be able to work on it all.

I've found benadryl helps me sleep this last week. I can't prescribe, but just saying. It is a cheap anti-histamine that is also found in tylenol PM. You need your rest so you have energy for tomorrow, and don't hurt yourself doing what you are doing.

Thanks again.

13. Jake, I want you to know something...
I said to my husband as I readied myself to work 12 hrs today (because my part time job with no benefits pays way too low for what I'm professionally trained to do), "Honey, please stop by the local Obama HQs after going grocery shopping and bring them something healthy to snack on!" He did. He's held signs for local Dem's trying to win congressional seats here in the midst of Republican attack machines and deep pockets.

Because of the last two years, I decided to spend money to run for a local council seat. I worked my ass off, had signs stolen, people bully me, and beat the competing incumbent. This Tuesday, I'm running on both tickets (first time I've ever been listed as a Republican, but that's how it works here when no one runs a Rep. candidate and I get the write-in vote). For my special election race win, I'll have to start 2 months into my serving term next year so I can re-run to attain the seat for the regular 4 yr term.

People who you think are on your side challenge your belief systems every day. I said to myself, "okay, if Obama's campaign has endured ALL this stuff, I can endure. You have encouraged me and for that, I'll have the chance to participate in representing people fairly in local office. Because YOU care deeply, I care more.

I'm here Jake. Thank you. :hi:

14. Okay Jake. First thing. Fall back (daylight savings)
so you get one more hour of sleep.

Second thing. I got a little thrill on the conference call tonight hearing Barack's voice. That powered me up for another hour and for tomorrow.

We can do this. Leave it all on the field.

Well, I'm hitting the hay. Gotta be there at 8am tomorrow to finish organizing packets.

Thanks for all your service.

21. One last full measure
only this time, it is not the warriors who will die, but eight years of pillage, anti-americanism and contempt towards all but the privileged few - it is this that will see its time pass.

We need one last full measure, my friend, to push the tyrant from his perch.

I'm not going to make it up to PA, I'm afraid - I'll be down in Norfolk/Va Beach for my last push - but we WILL be together for the Inauguration!

I'm doing anything I can to convince my lazy ass friends in NYC to head to you guys in Allentown - it kills me that I can't rent the cars and whip their butts West - please fight for all of us who were there and can't be there - and for your great teams and the resilience you've shown soldiering on through all the bullshit - fight for Pennsylvania to find its better nature and stay blue!

29. Hey, I met your NYC friends.
They were standing outside my shop yesterday with their clipboards. I asked them if they were canvassing and they said, yep, they were in from NYC until the election. Their canvas list was about an inch thick too.

Bless them, bless you and bless us all. We WILL do this!!!

I seen you posting about your volunteer work for Obama ever since the primaries.
You've been at this for a long time.

It won't be close, and they won't be able to steal it.

26. From David McCullough's 1776 pg 35-36

John Greenwood a fifer. . .was sixteen hearing the news of Lexington and Concord, he had set off on foot with little more than the clothes on his back, his fife protruding from a front pocket. All alone he walked to Boston, 150 miles through what was still, much of the route, uninhabited wilderness. . . .

Later, passsing through Cambridge, he learned of the battle raging at Bunker Hill. Wounded men were being laid out on the Common. "Everywhere the greatest terror and confusion seemed to prevail". The boy started running along the road that led to the battle, past wagons carrying more casualties and wounded men strugglying back to Cambridge on foot. Terrified, he wished he had never enlisted. "I could positively feel my hair stand on end" But then he saw a lone soldier coming down the road.

. . . . a Negro man, wounded in the back of his neck, passed me and, his collar being open and he not having anything on except his shirt and trouser, I asked him if it hurt much, as he did not seem to mind it. He said no, that he was only to get a plaster put on it and meant to return. You cannot conceive what encouragement this immediately gave me. I began to feel brave and like a soldier from that moment, and fear never troubled me afterward during the whole war.

Just like the neck wound of that forgotten American patriot your struggle is motivating everyone who visits this thread and everyone who enters your office.

Two hundred years from now students will study the strange spontaneous mass uprising that began a political revolution where a consumerist society rendered passive by its lust for gadget came to take back a political process that was dominated by corporate interests rendered obsessed with its lust for short term profits. Listen to Obama carefully, this is not the end - this is the begining of a mass operation. Those contacts and those names are not just for this election - he is actually organizing the entire country.

They will not understand how deeply angry the citizens were that caused them to put aside their Barclay Loungers and spend endless hours engaging their fellow citizens. They will read about it and they will write term papers about it. Trying to understand how it began, in those term papers they will write about common folks who saw their loved ones damaged by a health system gone insane, soldiers maimed by the tens of thousands in an 'optional war', and workers who work longer and longer hours to provide less and less.

They will write about an average prototypical guy who worked long hours over many months fighting complacency, greed and passivity, and encouranging hundreds who want to contribute, and, like the wounded soldier in McCullough's book, they will not know his name.

We do.

His name is Jake 3463.

28. "Obama! Yes! He fight for the little guy!"
- said by 2 Hispanic laborers taking a break at a house re-hab who saw us walking by with our clipboards and Obama t-shirts yesterday

As one of those rank-and-file volunteers, awed by the amazing organization, we say "thank you, Jake". My S.O. has never canvassed before, and I had to point out the amount of effort that went into providing us maps, directions, call-sheets, talking points, scripts, and flyers in a nifty little clipboard-packet. He took it for granted - like that packet just assembled itself.

You're up there in the Lehigh Valley, fighting the good fight, in the midst of a lot of elderly, single-issue voters, whose priests are telling them to be sure to vote for "life" (:puke:)

Also, your ex-fiance isn't alone - last month the Inquirer interviewed a guy without insurance who gave a fake name at the hospital, and since he was there for a heart condition, they had to treat him. He also snuck out without paying. As they would say further west in our great state, "this situation needs fixed".

And you're part of the solution - when Pennsylvania goes overwhelmingly blue on election day, we'll know who to thank.
