Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 10:07 AM by knowledgeispwr
2,537,206 have early voted, out of a total of 6,232,230 total registered voters, or 41% of all voters.

This is equal to 71.4% of the 2004 General Election turn-out!

More info in this pdf.

In a dailykos diary are some interesting numbers:

2,369,577 voters voted "one-stop" or regular early voting. There were 193,291 "civilian" absentee ballots, 7021 military ballots and 3,317 overseas ballots. Here are more details:

Dems Rep UNA LIB
1325226 774147 472189 1644
51.50% 30.08% 18.35% 0.06%

African American Totals:
# % of Total Vote
681766 26.49%

(89.4% of African Americans in NC are Democrats.)

Edited to add: In 2004, AA turnout was about 18% according to the State Board of Elections, despite CNN exit polls.

2. Wow. That's SO great!
I voted when early voting started, but I've been calling and bugging my kids ever since. Looks like they'll be voting on election day, sigh.

College students apparently have to do EVERYTHING at the last minute. :D

7. We're busy!
Haha! I'm in grad school now, and managed to vote early, but I think a lot of my peers will vote on election day.

12. Thanks for your vote of confidence. I actually offered voting "bonuses" to my
kids if they get their butts to the polls. I'm sure the Repubs would call that tampering or something....fortunately,
I don't give a rat's ass. :D

4. Even if all the unaffiliated early voters were to go for McCain,
and assuming all Dems vote for Obama and all Repigs for McNutso, Obama would still be leading in the early voting, 51.5-48.4.

On the other hand, if the unaffiliated break 50-50, Obama would be leading better than 60-40.

Wow. North Carolina, fer Chrissakes.

5. A lot of those registered Dems aren't really Dems.
However, the situation looks good.

11. a lot of those early repubulicans voters
didn't vote for McCain.
Anecdotal but I know of quite a few registered Republicans who voted for Obama.
Most of the GOP here will end up voting for McCain but many of those who went to vote early (read enthusiastic voters) cast their ballot for Obama.

6. I think Obama will have an advantage of "unaffiliated" voters,
but McCain will get a significant (not a large, but still significant) portion of the "Dems." All and all, I'm sure Obama has a substantial lead in early voting.

8. This is the South. A very large chunk of Democrats vote for the Republican candidate for prez
Don't think for a second that 100% of NC Democrats will be voting for Senator Obama. I'd love for that to happen, but it won't even be a number approaching that.

if the black vote finishes at around 22%, and elated if it's a few points higher.

10. I think it's possible.
It may be what lifts us and GA into Obama's column.

13. It's already passed that
African-American democratic turnout is already near 50% in NC. Take a look at the statistics on www.sboe.state.nc.us. It breaks down the total votes by demographic and party affiliation. Close to 600,000 African-American democratic votes have been cast in N.C. At the end of last year, there were 947,000 registered African-American dems in N.C. I think another 200,000 dems registered this year--so it's about 1.2 million registered African-American dems in N.C.

You can't really look at the total number of dems that voted because alot of dems in N.C. traditionally vote repub for the national elections (dems have outnumbered repubs in N.C. for years). However, African-American dems are a consistent dem vote.

Also, it looks like at least 150,000 people took advantage of the one-stop voter registration during early voting (register and vote on the same day). I think a lot of those votes went to Obama also).
