I'm so pissed at Tweety for calling Oly Stone's "JFK" and "Nixon" evil last night.

Okay, Tweety pisses me off regularly, and while I know some people have lots of gripes with JFK, somehow yesterday's comments really ticked me off, and made me almost want to stop watching his show.

I used to be a huge Stone fan, as much, perhaps, for his technique as topic, so I don't like "W" being compared favorably to his great epics.

Granted I thougth Born on the 4th and Platoon were also great, but JFK, Nixon and The Doors are his greatest films, IMO, even if it can be argued that they're not 100% accurate. I think JFK is way wrongly maligned, and is still one of my all time favorite films (as a conspiracy nut).

Anyway, I know this doesn't belong here, but since it was mainly about "W", I think it fits in with GDP, and because it was part of the discussion.

Incidentally I thought W was okay, but not great, and way, way way too short.

David

Edit: typo

1. JFK is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I cry at the end EVERY SINGLE TIME
I think Oliver does a lot of really strong work. I've met in IRL, and he is delightful. Thoughtful, kind, funny and smart as hell.
Met him during voice over work for BOTFJ.... where Tom Cruise came to the studio in a wheelchair to do all his voiceover work. He had to stay in character.

6. Born on the Fourth of July is one of my favorite movies . . .
of all time. My sister and I had to hold hands to get through the VA hospital scenes. We were just crying and distraught. Very moving film that didn't get enough praise. And perhaps Tom Cruise's best acting ever. He wasn't Tom Cruise in the movie, he was Ron Kovic.

I also thought Stone was unfairly maligned by Matthews. I also loved Any Given Sunday, Wall Street, Platoon, JFK, Nixon (I actually liked and respected Nixon much more after that film), and the Doors.

I could, however, go the rest of my life without ever seeing or hearing of Natural Born Killers again. I found it depressing, gratuitously violent, and just not entertaining.

9. I loved Natural Born Killers when I first saw it
because it seemed so "outside the box", but looking back now, I agree that I don't know if I could watch it again. I think it's one of those movies that, in the end, becomes what it's criticizing.

8. Really, I've heard he was an ass!
But in interviews and documentaries I've thought he seemed pretty cool.

I adore the background section at the beginning of JFK. Something about it just really runs perfectly.

12. He was great on Colbert recently.
You can probably find the interview online if you didn't see it.

13. He could not possibly have been nicer. I think I was like 14
or 15 at the time, and I was at my aunt's work hanging out with him and Stuart Copeland, both of whom were awesome.
I was there frequently for extra school credit for about a year, and I remember him doing BOTFJ and Talk Radio while I was around.
He was hilarious.

Tom Cruise... not so much.

But he was very IN character, so that would explain it.

2. I watched W. last night and had to walk out...
because it was the late show and I was falling asleep. I thought it was terribly boring. How can you make a boring movie like that with such relevant issues???

7. I thought it was way too sympathetic, but at least human, and I liked that it cast
GHWBush as the real villian.

But I thought it skipped over way too much, and didn't delve deeply into any real issues. Even his recovery from alcoholism was dealt with way too quickly, and didn't leave a real impression of his struggle.

When the movie was over my wife turned to me and said, "What was the point of that movie?" and as I film buff I immediately got defensive and said "Does a movie have to have a point?"... but not long afterwards, I found myself saying "What the heck was the point of that movie?"

And whoever played Rice was awful - seemed to be playing a cartoon of her, and I thought Powell got off way too easily.

11. My feelings on the movie are just like yours (Spoiler alert)
Edited on Sun Nov-02-08 10:12 PM by Lost-in-FL
GHWB was such an asshole and W looked very whiny and ready to please others, hungry to earn everyones approval. Barbara was plain horrible.

I didn't know the purpose of the movie either. I left maybe 15 minutes before the end I guess. When Daddy Bush gave W a pair of gold cuffs (I think) cause I don't know if I felt asleep.

Colin Powell, still have no sympathy for the guy. How can a general be manipulated by people with NO knowledge of military affairs is beyond me.

3. While I might quibble with some aspects, JFK was a genuinely great film.
And I found Nixon to be a surprisingly sympathetic portrayal of the man, though that did not affect my enjoyment of it.

Both of the films were good, I don't see how Tweety could say they were "evil."

5. I thought Nixon was a pretty good movie.
I liked JFK too. I have no interest in W. Living thru 8 years of W was enough.
