Obama and Clinton reach common ground
Interesting article.

By CARRIE BUDOFF BROWN & GLENN THRUSH | 11/2/08

GARY, Ind. — While the relationship between Barack Obama and the Clintons remains complicated, associates in both camps say the dynamic has improved dramatically in recent months.

Obama’s embrace of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s domestic agenda, the former first couple’s admiration for his political acumen and the healing power of time and distance after a bruising 17-month primary battle all have had an ameliorative effect on what once appeared to be an irreparable rift.

The detente undoubtedly has its benefits for the Clintons, who would be permanently damaged if their fellow Democrats so much as suspected they were only halfheartedly behind the nominee. And an additional force is pushing them closer together: Hillary Clinton’s belief that a President John McCain would, more or less, destroy America.

Indeed, since the Democratic National Convention, Hillary Clinton has thrown herself into campaigning, headlining about three dozen rallies and fundraisers. Bill Clinton ramped up his pace after Obama paid homage in mid-September at his Harlem office. In the past month, the former president has hosted almost 20 events.

2. He won't get a health care bill through the Senate without her support
So this relationship is vital.

7. the word on the street is that Senator Kennedy will be writing a health care bill that
he wants to be a landmark legislation to be remembered as a part of his legacy. I'm hearing that Clinton will help with that behind the scenes, but not so publicly, to let it be Kennedy's bill.

9. I heard it too.
Her health plan was better than the original Obama plan, I hope that Kennedy's proposal resembles hers.

12. I heard that Kennedy's plan is single-payer.
Regardless, it's a wonderful, selfless way for him to end his career.

5. I could see Obama creating a Presidential Council on Health Care issues putting Hillary
front and center on it.

8. And this time, howzahout we push her to go with her stated position
--that single payer is the best option? The "politically doable" part depends on US!

10. That is great to know. Hillary has been very good in raising money and campaigning for
Obama and the article is right, she would be damaged if seen as a spoil-sport. Instead, I really respect her now as do others who were no fans of hers in the primaries. I think her toughness helped Barack, especially in the debates. If you can debate Hillary Clinton (who was awesome, beyond great in the debates) then McCain is easy.

11. Hillary would've never been a problem when it comes to health care but those conservative for
the conservative dems it will probably be a problem.

14. I just hope that he returns the favor after the election and holds some fundraisers
to help retire her campaign debt. She has certainly campaigned and raised more funds for him than any other former opponent has done in previous elections.

15. I think a lot of us here are planning to donate to her as soon as the
election is over. I will contribute when I get my mid-November paycheck. Realistically I think it will probably be February or March before some folks will be able to give very much, just because of the upcoming holidays and the bill paying that will follow. Hopefully there will be some fundraisers with people who have deep pockets in the meantime.

I wonder if Skinner would post a sticky thread to donate to Hillary. She has worked her heart out for Obama and I think she deserves appreciation for that.

17. That is a great idea!!!
Maybe someone should propose it to Skinner after the election.

Thank you also for offering to contribute. The campaign debt worries Hillary and it would lift a weight off her shoulders to not have that hanging over her head.

take care!!!

16. The one thing with which I disagree
is that the relationship once appeared to be an irreparable rift.

I never doubted that whichever one of them won the nomination the other would wholeheartedly support the winner.

Campaigns are often brutal. Politicians rarely, IMO, remain personally offended by them. If they did, they would be in a constant state of being offended.
