supreme court changes
I keep seeing the estimate that 4 maybe 5 supreme court justices will step down in the next four years. I don't keep up much with the supremes. Could people tell me which justices they think are going to step down and why (health age etc)? I am also interested in where the "retiring" justices stand politically (who appointed them and how conservative or liberal they are).

Thanks

1. Three tops.
Which ones might depend on who wins the WH.

2. I could see these four
Stevens - age (liberal)
Rehnquist - age (conservative)
O'Connor - burnout (moderate)
Ginsberg - health (liberal)

8. I agree.
I think he would have already retired if Gore had been elected.

5. Thanks.
I know that O'conner was quite ill a while back (breast cancer), but I did read an article that said she is quite well now and that she has no intention of stepping down (could this be eyewash?)?

Is Ginsberg sick? And with what?

It does look like we could get rid of a couple of fairly conservative ones...good news!!!

4. Rehnquist, Stevens, O'connor the 3 most likely.
Bush appointing Rehnquist's successor would change little. Billy's been a BCE man from day one, so would his replacement.

Stevens is a liberal, and Bush replacing him would be the disaster.

O'Connor was a BCE appointee (under Reagan) and she was part of the Felonious Florida Five, but she hasn't always voted the party line. The Texas sodomy case being a recent example. If Bush is allowed to name her replacement, chances are the BCE will be looking for someone more compliant with their agenda all of the time.

6. Conventional wisdom
arcos and AntiCoup2k pretty much nailed the conventional wisdom on the three potential retirements in the 2005-2008 term.
