My 7th grade students voted in a district "election" today...caught one student spreading crap
propaganda about Obama not saying the flag salute ect...all the crap that has been spewed all election season long...she was just repeating the shit her dad says...Her dad who supports his family on disability and foodstamps and medical cards.

Took the opportunity to teach many things. First I showed them snopes went though the falicies

Next talked about no campainging in the voting area...used the analogy that my classroom was the polling place and that any campaigning had to be more than 100 feet away

finally talked about privacy when voting.

Students had to vote on my computer so I would call them up 5 at a time and then had them turn their backs while others were voting...I didn't even look. They then got a proud voter sticker when they were done.

The result of my classroom 5 for McCain 156 for Obama

District wide...as of 3 pm it was 2,500+ for McCain and 7,000 + for Obama

and I know there were many buildings that will be doing the "election" tomorrow.

The kids know where it is!!!

1. Our (elementary school) was 260 Obama
80-- McCain
and a student today announced to me that if Obams loses "she is moving to Canada". She also had some rich things to say about Palin.
This is Pennsylvania people!!!
The 5 county region.
If Pennsylvania goes McCain I hope some questions it....
Because all I've seen is overwhelming Obama....

5. Oh, of course! I didn't think you'd told them how to vote or for whom you were voting.
It goes without saying that well-educated kids with great teachers are usually Democrats! :)

6. I hope so
I hope I give them the tools to see through the BULLSHIT and to make wise informed decisions.

Last 2 weeks we deviated from our pacing guide and I taught them about propaganda and how to spot it. We used real life political commericals and regular product commercials.

I think it made them think about things

7. You sound like my husband, another great teacher. He says critical thinking skills are the MOST
important things educators can teach their students.

Brava and bravo to all you wonderful people! :applause:

8. thank you ... that is my goal
years from now, I could care less if they remember what river flows what way along the Andes mountains ect...

I do hope they remember how to think for themselves and make good choices and remember that their teacher was a good role model on many things like how to solve differences without being hateful, how to conduct yourself and be respectful and most of all how to make informed choices
