I'm nervous and excited and so hopeful.

And I can't stop crying.

I'm - I can't get my head around the fact that we are here. Less than 50 years ago, African-Americans were prevented, LEGALLY, from voting in large swaths of our country, until the Voting Rights Act of 1964 was enacted (and for some time after that).

And today, every citizen - of any ancestry, of any color, of any religion - has a chance to vote for this most amazing man, who - happens to be black.

I can't stop crying.

This is his first election.

His mother/my sister is white. His father was African-American.

He was raised in an all-white very conservative, "christian" community (where fathers wouldn't let their daughters date him; and where the local school changed their "homeschooling rules" in the hopes that he would play sports for them, because, you know .... ).

He was raised in a very "republican" and very religious/fundamentalist extended family. (I'm the lone democrat in the bunch.)

Today, at 3:30 EST, at Messiah College in Pennsylvania, he's voting for Obama.

And he's doing it for principled reasons - Obama's position on the War, on poverty, and on reconciliation, which he has explained (to no avail) to his cousins.

He promised to text me as soon as his vote is cast.

in fact, I was so overcome that I took a wrong turn....

and I am a white woman.

I asked her how it felt to vote for a black man for president. She said, "I can't describe it." Her voice started to crack. She grew up in Mississippi and could not vote. She talked about how it was to live under Jim Crow. She said she never thought she would live to see the day that a black man would be this close to being president.

So, I understand your tears. Cry on!!!!:)

... but the story is that it's really possible.

The "Story" is your grandmother's story .. times several million.

I have voted at 6 a.m. at the same place in Reston since 1996 and have always pulled into the school parking lot, parked, walked into the school and into the auditorium to vote in about 5 minutes ... just like she and Arnie did. In 2004, there was a line to get into the auditorium, but it took about 30 minutes in total. Today, I couldn't park in the school parking lot. In fact, I couldn't park on any street between my house and the school. I had to turn around, go home, park in my garage, and walk to the school! It took only 75 minutes once I got there, but that was because the A-D line was empty. Had my name been L*****, I would have waited at least 30 minutes longer.

I honestly believe that many folks see this election as redefining the US. As Harold Ford said this a.m. (and I'm paraphrasing), "I'm under 40 and never experienced the kind of treatment my Dad got. To those like him, this election is more than just about policy. It is about a nation that finally understands what was wrong all those years."

but we are definitely on the way especially if a black/white man can get into the White House.
Obama is a man of many differences, black/white, native born/first of an international parent, he is a man of cultural differences from Kansas (midwest) to Hawaii. All this will make him a better man to sit in the office of the WH.
