WASHINGTON -- Leading technology companies urged Congress and the Bush administration today not to impose new trade restrictions aimed at keeping U.S. jobs from moving overseas, where labor costs are lower

Democratic front-runner Howard Dean said during a debate last month that America needs a president "who doesn't think that big corporations who get tax cuts ought to be able to move their headquarters to Bermuda and their jobs offshore."

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., introduced a bill in November requiring service representatives to disclose their physical location each time a customer calls to make a purchase, inquire about a transaction or ask for technical support. The proposal targets the increasingly popular decisions by companies to move their call centers overseas to capitalize on low labor costs.

"The problem is not a lack of highly educated workers," said Scott Kirwin, founder of the Information Technology Professionals Association of America. "The problem is a lack of highly educated workers willing to work for the minimum wage or lower in the U.S. Costs are driving outsourcing, not the quality of American schools."

After he spent his career supporting the "free trade" scams that make this kind of outsourcing and offshoring possible, now he wants to add a band-aid. Now everytime we call, we can be reminded of where our jobs went! :eyes:

Silicon Valley falls to Bangalore

BANGALORE: The inevitable has happened. Bangalore , which grew under the shadow of America's Silicon Valley over the last two decades, has finally overtaken its parent.

Today, Bangalore stands ahead of Bay Area, San Francisco and California, with a lead of 20,000 techies, while employing a total number of 1.5 lakh engineers. Bangalore, which commenced its R&D activities in 1986 when Texas Instruments set up its product engineering centre here, is currently home to the who's who of the global tech fraternity.

The recent recession in the US also forced most corporates there to move thousands of jobs to India in addition to tech giants such as Cisco, Intel , IBM, Oracle and i2 relocating some of their Indian-origin employees from the US centres to Bangalore.

Indian tech workers also returned home in large numbers as jobs dried up in the US.
